QUESTIONS ABOUT DAMAGE

18.7k F104Deathtrap  6.7 years ago

I have a few questions about the new damage system and a few about plane design in general.

1)Engines: If a prop engine gets hit, is it possible to extinguish the fire by cutting it's throttle to zero?

2) If so, can it be restarted when the fire is out or is it invariably "knocked out?"

3) If a prop does get knocked out, would it help reduce drag to "feather" the damaged prop (tune the prop pitch all the way)? Do prop-pitch controls work on damaged props? Would people even bother using this feature if I spent the time adding it to my planes?

4) Finally, do people (YOU) enjoy flying planes with complicated, realistic controls like individual engine throttles, aimable turrets, fully articulated fowler flaps, trim tabs, etc. or do you prefer overly simplistic control schemes where you just hit the throttle to 100 and go?

@FarrowAirlines They're doable in XML, but I've just posted an idea for making them easy peasy.

I know this wont work for props but do what i did and cpoy and paste the plane 3-4 times then finetune them in makes very durable plane

@F104Deathtrap Don't know about prop pitch, but if the propeller doesn't come off when it's set on fire, it has still little power in it.

@ValtsuAircraftIndustries Thanks! And once the fire goes out it's just dead, right? No restarting it, no messing with prop pitch or anything?

@F104Deathtrap It doesn't explode after. It burns for some time then the fire stops.

@doge Oh, multiple engines can be throttled individually or as a group, no need to swap anything around. Throttle settings stay put now, instead of returning to zero when you deselect it's AG, so you just pick the motor(s) you want, set the gas, and then deselect them. I could do the same thing with prop pitch and the VTOL slider. The only problem is getting the player to read the instructions, assuming that using sliders and AG buttons isn't a pain in the neck for mobile users.

The way I could see independent engine power is with Ag groups and set to vtol or trim and flaps set to throttle

@MrDoolittle Nah, I'm not a modder. I mess around with the xml tags a bit, but nothing that changes the game.

@F104Deathtrap oh lol I thought you meant implementing multiple throttles into the base game. By all means do make realistic controls

@MrDoolittle Is it really tricky doing that stuff? A four engine bomber is pretty boring to pilot, mostly just taxiing, taking off and getting to altitude. Many bombers will simply fall apart if you throw them around too much. Most of the real work is engine management, navigation and gunnery, so the more realistic I make the controls, the more stuff people have to do. But I certainly don't want to make something for mobile users that doesn't work.

@F104Deathtrap AGs are in a tab that we can open by tapping an arrow next to the speedometer (gear and weapon control is there too). VTOL is a scroll bar on the left side of the screen.

@doge True, I imagine the prop itself is easily damaged even if the motor itself is covered.

@MrDoolittle How do mobile users handle AGs and VTOL inputs?

    1) yes
    2) unknown (can't tell if the wind is moving the prop or of its spinning on its own)
    3)unknown
4)separate throttles would be nice but hard to implement for mobile.

Jets have the advantage of being surrounded by multiple layers of fusalodge making the very well Portetected

@WaffleCakes That's because your tires don't provide enough traction to overcome the torque of the asymmetrical thrust. If you slowly ease the the throttle up you might be able to get enough speed for your tail to help, but you'd probably run out of pavement before you had enough speed to take off.

One thing about damaged JET engines,is that when its on fire,it's impossible to take off. All it does are donuts.

@doge @ValtsuAircraftIndustries So it either just burns for a while and then goes out or explodes? Nothing else?
