Memorial Day

As Memorial Day comes to a close down here in Texas, I'm reminiscing on the history of the holiday. I notice how often people say "happy Memorial Day," as it is a holiday. I, personally, don't find this appropriate. Memorial Day isn't a day to be denoted as being necessarily happy; in fact, it really should have more of a melancholy tone to it. Now, I find this because Memorial Day itself is not about veterans or those serving, but remembering those who died specifically. So that's why I don't think Memorial Day is a happy day. Now, that's doesn't mean it's bad to take the three day weekend and go to the beach or have a barbecue. Continue doing that. Just remember what it all comes down to: soldiers making the ultimate sacrifice for us to enjoy our freedoms.

So to all those who've had family or friends make the ultimate sacrifice. God bless.

I agree @KDS , but on a less somber note, you said "a moment of science" instead of silence :p

I agree, I think it's not overly appropriate to say "happy memorial day" when thats essentially saying. "Hope you have a good time remembering dead, fallen soldiers." Yeah, no. Take a moment of silence to remember that people lived and died. But that doesn't mean you can't go enjoy yourself like a normal holiday. It's just not too appropriate to approach it like Christmas.
