This M28, known as "Mirage" by both friend and foe, and was assigned to 6th Battalion, 3rd Platoon, of the 2nd Armored Division. Her crew, veterans of the 2011 war against the RWA in Japan and Africa, were experienced. Taylor Hodges, Tank Commander. Jack Lewis, Gunner. Pete Richardson, Loader. Finally, Cody Snyder, Driver. Some crew modifications include: a drum at the back of the hull, usually filled with water. Extra armor was added to the side of the tank on the form of spare AR500 bulletproof steel, as Ecuadorian RPG teams like to get at the sides of UDC and Paternian tanks.
"Mirage" first saw combat in heavy skirmishes along the border of Panama and Columbia. She was escorting a troop convoy to a FOB. The convoy consisted of 20 M8A1 APCs, 6 M8 IFVs, and 4 M28s, including "Mirage". The convoy was ambushed by at least 6 EGA-6 Condor expeditionary tanks. While the EGA-6s main gun was only a threat to the M28 unless they got close to the sides but could penetrate the rear, but the M8s were in danger, as the EGA-6 could easily kill them. The EGA-6s were backed up by at least 3 EGA-8 Condor II MBTs. The Condor II was well respected by UDC infantry for its low profile and quiet running engine.
"Mirage" spotted a badly concealed EGA-6 and fired a HEAT Dual Charge round, destroying the vehicle. The other EGA-6s and 8s fired, destroying an M28 and a few M8A1s. "Mirage" focused on a EGA-8 as a badly placed HEAT round glanced off the side of the vehicle. She fired and put it out of commission. The remaining M8 IFVs fired their ATGMs and destroyed 3 EGA-6s. "Mirage" took a hit from a Corbiche ATGM, fired from one of the remaining EGA-6s, damaging one of her engines. By this point, only two M28s were remaining, and the other M28 destroyed the last EGA-6, but that same tank was penetrated due to the APS running out of shells.
It was now the damaged "Mirage" vs two of the finest tanks the Ecuadorian Army can offer. The EGA-8s were positioned in front of the tank, in a hull-down position. The M28 was in a less advantageous position on the main road to the FOB. Paternian AH-2 helicopters made rocket runs, but were pestered with 20mm cannon fire. At this point in time, "Mirage" was on her last legs. Her engine was damaged, a track was blown, some optics were destroyed, and ammunition was running low on the 120mm.
Suddenly, a platoon of Paternian M5 Victoria MBTs appeared from behind, apparently coming from the FOB. Afterwards, the crew counted over 70 gouges in the armor. All in all, the convoy attack was a technical victory for UDC, but a strategic win for the Ecuadorian Army. 11 M8A1 APCs, 2 M8 IFVs, and out of the 3 knocked out M28s, two were damaged beyond repair. "Mirage" was repaired and rejoined her platoon, where they remain in Colombia.
