Simpleplanes stock planes, Generation 1

19.6k StockPlanesRemastered  2 days ago

This is a review of the stock planes of simpleplanes, similar to my review of the planes of Simpleplanes 2, with links. We will be covering what i like to call Gen 1. These were included in the original release of the game, before 1.1.

The Biplane By Boxglow. This plane was a custom four engine transport aircraft. It had a tendency to be nose heavy when going slower than 260 mph and had a top speed at all altitudes of 280. It was removed with the fuselage update sadly.
Trivia:
-although custom, it resembled The AN-12, and Airbus A400M albeit with an extra set of wings.
-The only four engine (in conventional configuration) Biplane to ever exist was the Sikorski Ilya Muromets, a Great War era flying RV.
-Did i mention the A400m? We would later get a stock one in the game as an AI refueling tanker. I wonder how this plane would do in that roll?

The Twinprop also by Boxglow was a small twin engine passenger plane, originally supposed to resemble the Cessna 414. It was very maneuverable, as it had main wing elevators to aid in pitch control. an example of the twinprop has been kept as a stock plane in every version of the game (so far)
-After the 1.1 update, this plane would serve as the basis for the tutorial plane until the fuselage update.

The Vertigo By developer Andrew Garrison was a custom fighter jet meant to act as an example for how a vertijet should be built. There has been a Vertigo in every version of the game.
Trivia
-Although custom, The first version resemble a prototype of the Grumman A-6 Intruder, a plane that, incidentally, happened to have thrust vectoring for short carrier takeoff.
-when autopilot is engaged, the vertigos engine nozzle snap to 90 degrees down.

The Sea Plane by Authros was a single engine, high wing aircraft with floats and wheels. It had a top speed of 206 and could both take off and land on water. Because of it's high mounted dihedral wing, it was very stable. It was, unfortunately, removed in 1.2
Trivia
-The Sea Plane resembled the Cessna 172 and DeHaviland DHC2.

The P-51 by developer Philip Tarpley was a large, single engine monoplane with a complex dihedral wing making it the best plane for learning how to fly. It had a top speed of 217 mph. There has been a P-51 in every version of the game.
Trivia
-although it shares a name, this aircraft has nothing in common with it's real world counterpart.
-It's the only 1.1 stock plane to feature jetosinable landing gear.

The Trainer Jet By UnstableOrbit Is a custom jet aircraft resembling a combination of Northrop's LFX program and all it's derivatives. It features a cranked reverse delta wing and twin engines. It features a camouflage paint scheme, weird inlet placement and a top speed just under 600 mph. Although it didn't make the 1.2 cut, or any after it, a Trainer Jet with the same wing design was included in the latest update to Juno.
Trivia
-The Trainer Jet appears to take design elements from the T-38, X-29, and YF-17.
-the jet features inlets placed midway down the wing spar. While unconventional for a jet, it is not unrealistic, as many propeller driven aircraft have oil cooler inlets placed here. However I do believe it would create issues approaching super sonic speed.

The Seaplane Low Wing, again by Philip Tarpley is a large, single engine, low wing sea plane. Like the P-51 it features a complex-dihedral wing making it a stable platform. It also has a top speed of around 210mph. A low wing sea plane has been included in every version of the game, up until 1.9.

Honerable mentions: not included as flyable aircraft, but mad there way in as UI icons

The Corsair. No one knows who made this plane, but it is rumored to have been uploaded to the Site by Philip Tarpley to test upload functionality. The Corsair is another large single engine monoplane with gull wings and jetosinable landing gear, and features a navy blue paint scheme, making it look right at home aboard the USS Tiny. It was used as a UI icon, for the download aircraft button in version 1.1, which was phased out by 1.2.
Trivia:
-it appears to be inspired by the F4U Corsair
-it was the very first plane uploaded to the site
-it had the highest upvotes until version 1.3 when fuselages were introduced, and it was dethroned by a P-51
-Although a Corsair never appeared as a stock plane in the game, we will be getting a Corsair derivative in Simpleplanes 2, known as Whistler, named after the whistling death.

The Flying Wing By waveofthought was another plane featured as a UI Icon, but not used as a stock plane. It featured 8 jet engines and a sleek, but featureless wing design with the outer most wing pieces angled up at 45 degrees for stability. Because of its design It suffered from pitch reversal.
Trivia
-The Flying Wing, because of it's V-wing tips, is not a true flying wing, but more of a lifting body aircraft, like the Martin Marietta X-24.
-Aside from being a lifting body, The Flying wing appears to take design ques from the Horten H.XVIII, and Northrop YB-49, giving it the appearance of a post WWII Jet powered conventional bomber. and before you come for me, the reason I don't add the B-2 to that list is because i set paint aside.

Note on 1.1 update: retractable landing gear was added as well as some more engines. No change was made to the stock planes roster.

Note on 1.2 : There was a physics overhaul, breaking some planes. therefore they were not carried over or developed for some reason. procedural Fuselages and noses were also added.

Note on 1.3: Simpleplanes comes to steam, making acquisition of the game much easier for customers.

Oh damn I forgot about that sea plane!
The one thing I remember about it is that it couldn't even takeoff or land on the water, it just flipped onto it's nose lol
