It is with great sadness I announce that I have failed.
I return from my period of exile with a mere six short stories nearly completed and ready to post, not the eight total that I had hoped. Life's like that, y'know?
Yeah. Prepare thyself. More on this later.
On some other notes, my continued access to my laptop is in some dispute courtesy of an increasing problem most certainly resulting from the BattlEye anticheat used by War Thunder. Sigh. As a result, I'm not willing to go through the pain of reinstalling Reshade until that matter is handled, just in case it somehow requires another wipe. No major craft releases for the time being, sadly.
Also, did you know that threatening to refine an oily fictional character into gasoline can get you banned on Reddit? Turns out it can. God, the filters there are stupid.
And I just got off the last one a few days ago too!
That, heh, that one was far more legitimate. No regrets.
Annyyyhow. I'm back. No longer just lurking.
Fear me.
On the matter of the short stories, I'm well aware that dropping six forums totalling over twenty thousand words in quick succession would probably not be received particularly well by some people.
To those people I say...
Of course, as I am a gracious god, I'll ask this question: How should I space posting those? At what interval? I'm thinking every couple days, seems a happy medium.
If anyone would like to hear more (which, quite frankly, I doubt), I'm willing to discuss. I'll likely post a forum dedicated to the majority of these soon, as all but one were created as part of a collection.
Glad to see people actually noticing this forum, but for real about the spacing.
How quick is too quick?
Edit: Ayyyy Reddit accepted my appeal. Guess sometimes the Admins are smarter than the bots.
Goodness, I am happy this site is small enough that AutoModerator is only a flagging tool...
@V It’s fun sometimes.
War thunder sucks anyways, welcome back grain guy
@SupremeDorian Ah. Sorry
I am quite terrible at more "official" stuff. If you remember that email I sent, so much is obvious. Granted, that was a bit different, but I digress.
I do mean what I said about not having figured you out, though. I don't mean that as an insult, of course, just that when dealing with someone new it can be hard to tell where they stand on things. There's always the issue that a poorly-argued position can turn someone against it... which I probably increased the likelihood of happening by my desperate attempts to avert that with detail.
So, uh, thanks for clearing that up.
If it helps, I do tend to keep what I make tied together in some fashion, so it's not like I intend to start posting stuff completely irrelevant to my SP work in large quantities. Tied loosely, mind, but still tied.
Taking the chance to ask something else that was on my mind:
When someone is banned, usually alts remain up. As far as I'm aware, this is just because Moderators don't keep a running list of which account is whose.
Of course, I was a good little grain and remained silent, but, I'm wondering what the limits are:
1. Can a person use an alt to report rule-breaking behaviour, or would revealing the alt as being active count as ban evasion?
2. Is it allowed, or rather disallowed, to send a single (and I mean single) message to someone else to tell them where they can contact you elsewhere? e.g. tagging and saying you can be found on another platform under the same name, and nothing more.
@Graingy I don't mean to stress you out, I suggested compiling them because you seemed worried about spam and that would be a solution to that, but your explanation for not doing so makes sense. Personally I love that people deem this community to be worthy of their art/creative projects, so I don't want to hinder that too much.
@SupremeDorian Oh, got cut off. Oops.
Remainer below.
... rather funny, actually.
Not to say I don't try with my stories, quite the opposite, just that speaking to an authority figure who you've not quite figured out (one officially charged with maintaining the community in a Jundroo-approved manner at that) is stressful when they could make or break something you've been working on for a long time with excitement to finally share it. For reference, your last comment still says "4 minutes ago" on my screen.
Am I overstressing on this? Last time I posted a short story (and that was only one) it was still MrSilverWolf being the judge of what is acceptable.
Did I just interpret what was basically a "it's not a big deal" as "you'd best do things this way"?
Do I look crazy to you?
I probably look crazy.
I think I am crazy...
I'm just gonna send this and pray divine judgement is feeling merciful rather than angered at my incessant blubbering.
TL;DR: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
@oldnoble Firstly, you are going to get in a lot more trouble for this (though I kinda understand... wait, don't you have Discord with other SP members? Why not just talk through them?)
Secondly, yeah no crap. Wasn't funny, shouldn't have been made. No benefit to anybody. C'mon, man. Think.
@SupremeDorian
Eh, having people that dislike you is a given when you've been in a space long enough. I'm fine if some people don't love me. As long as they're not slandering or very overtly insulting me (which, of course, has happened) I can live with it. Additionally, people who make a big deal out of not liking others shouldn't be surprised to hear if people don't like them in return (though naming names is obviously never a good idea, of course). Reap what you sow and all that.
Foreword:
The following is the desperate attempts of someone trying to vouch for themselves without angering what amounts to a God. Read it as such.
I don't intend to compile into one forum completely for a few reasons:
-Firstly, they're separate stories. While most are in an anthology, they're still distinct and meant to stand on their own.
-Secondly, I'm gonna be real, a single post for all feels akin to building several planes and posting them each as unlisted, only made public by a single normal post linking to all of them. All that effort for one moment where people could see it in new, and one line of feedback... ehhhh, not appealing. Just wouldn't feel worth it. Points aside (which I don't care about, coming from forums), social validation for efforts, regardless the sort, is a major motivator in this community.
-Thirdly, I actually do compile my stuff, I have an archive forum I keep updated, I just keep the content in individual posts linked within. That said, I'll probably make a sub-archive specifically for this anthology.
All of this is to say, while I don't want to cause issues for other people in doing this, I don't want to be forcing myself in a corner despite my efforts. Time between things feels the best balance here.
SimplePlanes.com, at least to me, is a social place with a strong unifying topic to hold it all together, like a hobby convention, rather than a laser-focused trade show. Games (and their communities) are, after all, about having a good time, not "completing" them by going all-in on maximum efficiency towards their core purpose (in this case uploading airplanes) at the expense of all else.
I'm not sure if you share my perspective on this site, but that's how I, personally, feel this place is at its most enjoyable and why I like being here so much.
It's maintained, but not constricting.
Finishing this off speaking frankly, but I probably put more effort into the prose of this comment than any of my stories, which is... ra
@Graingy Banned me for 7 days btw, all for a joke I made on monarchi's forum
@SupremeDorianI think what Noble meant by "I want you to keep pissing them off" was that he only wanted him to keep posting forums while they got unnecessarily mad at it
@Graingy I guess I just missed the context then, my bad. Though, having a better read on the context, the open statement of disdain for other members of the community (not to mention yourself, right to your face) on CaptainNoble's part is unacceptable on its own.
.
For posting your stories, I don't think the timing really matters. If you ask me I don't see why you couldn't compile several into one post, though. Solves the spam concern and should make it a little easier to navigate.
@SupremeDorian I didn't see it that way at all.
Rather, completely akin to someone telling another to keep posting mid-quality craft. Whether because they like it or because others whine about it, what gets posted at that encouragement was not done made out of malice.
I certainly didn't write these out of a desire to annoy people.
... Well, okay, part of it was wanting to make use of my ban time to ironically be at my most productive in regards to producing content for the community, and writing was the most appealing thing to me I could do, but my point stands.
I should take the time to ask, seeing as you're the head Mod, would every two or so days be acceptable? Or should I space them out more?
People do occasionally post art here, and I've gotten through fine with posting stories in the past, so I understand that what I'm doing is acceptable with precedent, I just don't want to do too much too quickly as to "flood" the forum.
@Graingy I'm referring to the "I want you to keep pissing them off" comment -- at best it seems to me that it's rather plainly encouraging you to deliberately bother people, which I'd really rather you guys didn't do.
@CaptainNoble Wait, dislike or used to dislike?
Honestly I've no idea what the status between us is beyond "not completely horrible".
@CaptainNoble I see...
Well, to uneasy truces I guess.
@SupremeDorian I didn't see them encouraging harassment, unless there was a removed comment? As far as I saw they just told me to do something anyways even though some people get unreasonably upset with it.
@SupremeDorian when did I do that?, when did I even imply I'll do that?
@CaptainNoble I don't know what this is about, but I will ask that you don't encourage harassing people on other platforms.
@Mrcooldude hmm
@Graingy oh?
@Graingy Just used to dislike you independently, I despise them more.
@CaptainNoble I don't. Honestly I thought you were part of that group.
I know the group of people you're pissing off, and I want you to keep pissing them off
@Yish42 Just read the bio, bud...
@Graingy thats exactly what i meant lol
So...i guess I'm not informed enough,is Graingy some sort of influencer or journalist thingy?
@Yish42 Which us are you referring to? I see no us.
Unless you mean
In which case I'm referring to Graingy. The company.
Daily reminder that I am not Graingy, I am Grain. I manage the company's social media, but I am not the company itself.
