The 1946 Naval Design Bureau Results [1946 Specifications Challenge Results]

20.5k LieutenantSOT  one year ago

Now, after months and weeks of strenuous testing and competing with designs, Curtiss, North American, and apparently a Japanese design bureau named Nakajima, among others have come together with designs for the competition for a fast fighter!

Now, for starters, here is the official grading scale to mitigate confusion in the future:

  • Speed (Realistic, and with the parameters?) x/10
  • Maneuverability (Is it realistic? Not too fast?) x/10
  • Extra Realism (Shape, details, acceleration) x/15
  • How close to the Requirements x/30
  • Carrier Operation (Can it land, take off, and go through with a mission? Does it have folding wings or space-saving features?) x/15
  • Tactical Feasibility (Does it pass my test?) x/10
  • Looks (sexy beast or vundervaffe potato?) x/5
  • My Opinion/Cool Stuff Extra Sexy Point x/5
    Total: 100

I will say this once: I will just post the scores for aircraft that I have already intensely scored, and I will post the entire score for the two I have yet to grade

Now, there were 6 approved designs to this scenario, and as such, I will start from the bottom and go towards the top, and tag necessary individuals in the comments!

First off, we have

6th Place, GP-230 Knucker by GeekPride

This aircraft, even by my standards, has a really unique design, and I quite like it! Although, it underperforms in many areas, and realistically would have been rather poor as a naval fighter aircraft. However, I still love the creativity that goes into it and I know your skills will continue to grow!!

Score: 72%

Next, we have

5th Place, P-95 by Planebuilder2123

This aircraft was pretty fun to fly around, and rather accurate for the era as well! The looks and overall features were decent, but I still feel like this aircraft has more potential. Either way, a great submission!

Score: 86.5%

Next up before our final 3, we have

4th Place, SP-37-100 "Type 37" by SPAircraftOfficial's own bureau!

I will say, this aircraft was pretty cool! I didn't get to score it, so I will do so here, but it is definitely worthy of being 4th place!

Speed 10/10
Maneuverability 8/10
Extra Realism 12/15
Requirements 20/30
Carrier Operation 15/15
Tactical Feasibility 10/10
Looks 3/5
My Opinion 5/5
Bonus: +4

This aircraft overall was really fun to fly around! She's got some great speed, and amazing armament, which is the issue: the armament surpasses what is allowed for this challenge, as much as I love all of the weapons, realistically, this aircraft would not have carried torpedos. Other than that, an amazing competitor I had fun with!

Score: 87%

Final Three

3rd Place, Nakajima Ki-202 Goryo by Jabuticaba23!

(who, cough is also the 1st place winner, so I will also try and give them the 3rd place points as well)

This aircraft is great!! Even if it is made by a country that does better landing on destroyers with high explosives than on a carrier safely, but yeah! Realistically, even during occupation, I highly doubt the United States would have adopted Japanese designs. This aircraft still was great, and deserves this place!

Score: 88%

2nd Place, we have the North American XF2J-2 Charger by GhostHTX!

Now, this plane hits all of my sweet spots, and I love it so much! The internal propellers with the turboshaft, the weapons, the overall design, it is chef's kiss
I believe it is very deserving of the 2nd place spot, and the only reason it is not first, also because the first place is amazing, but also because realistically, the United States is very.... backwards. During this time, the United States did not want to build jet aircraft, even into the 60s, the US was still using many aircraft with piston engines because we wanted to mass produce what we knew we could rely on, and especially such a dramatic design choice as inline propellers embedded into the fuselage, the United States would have been reluctant to accept such a proposal. Nonetheless, bloody amazing submission, my friend

Score: 90%

Now... for the moment you have all been waiting for...

Dramatic Drum Roll

The winnner of the 1946 Design Specifications Challenge...

1st Place, Curtiss F16C-2 Albatross by once again, Jabuticaba23!!

This aircraft was absolutely amazing and reminds me of many mid-to-late 40s aircraft. Historically, the winner of the challenge in 1945 was the Ryan Aircraft Corporation, and their FR-1 "Fireball," which resembles this minus the booms. This aircraft hits all of my sweet spots, it can go the speeds necessary, has great maneuverability, and can do pretty much everything necessary. For this reason, my friend, you are the victor! Hoo-rah! Now to fight in the Korean War...

Final Notes

With all that said and done, this challenge is hereby closed. I will begin giving points in a little bit, but I have failed to do so in previous challenges, but I promise I will this time. Again, thank everyone so much for participating, and I hope to catch y'all around!

@Michiganstatepolice yeah! It'll probably be a few months though, I'm planning on going by eras, and I have a specific goal for the stealth one, it'll take place in 2043, and I have an actual purpose behind it that I'm interested in seeing...

@LieutenantSOT can i suggest a stealth aircraft challenge, it doesn't matter what generation aslong as its between 4 and 6th gen, it would be neat to remake my old blujay mk2
