On current events here on SP (about Parzival and build quality)

7,397 FeiWu  3.5 years ago

I hope this is not a drama post.

So I have been very, and I mean very, active on this website for the last 6 months. I have made a lot of friends. Some of these have left me. The most recent one of these people to at least temporarily (but in this case permanently) leave this community is @ParziParziTheVal.
I have known him for 5 months, and he had a nice, simplistic building style. He had a habit of removing planes which he felt was bad. Three days ago, he published his latest plane, the Mooney M20. The next day, the plane was deleted, but at that point, he straight up left.

With an unfinished collab with him, (see my most recent teaser) this was unthinkable for me at the time. But I noticed in the post of the mooney he said that he would like to spend more time with family and friends instead of on this website building FAKE airplanes? Hmm. Someone who worked this hard to get 10k and entered this community passionate about aviation would not say this. It must be someone else.

Hmmm. Relatable. This looks like what your mom would say when she grounds you for playing too much SP, right?

This also explains why we wouldn't answer my questions to him on Discord; His phone is taken away.

Parzival, if you're reading this, just tell me why you left.

PART 2

My builds have a slightly increasing quality over time. I believe in quality over quantity, and thus I post every 2-3 months or so. Except this time. A high-quality replica collab that is 5 weeks behind will take longer. But they have been consistently getting less and less upvotes. Why is this? Do people only bother to look in their jetstream and the home page these days? I don't think so. Is my quality not up to the standard for those at 4.5k? Maybe. Tell me why in the comments.

I have also posted a lot of challenges, the most recent of which is the Bush Plane Challenge. It is the first link in my bio if you're interested. As of now I have 16 upvotes, but the challenge before, the Amphibian Challenge, landed me on the home page with nearly 40. Is it because my content is bad, or are people just not interested in these things now?

Thank you for reading.
PS Another burning question is that why do challenges with 36 upvotes and 478 downloads only have 9 entries? The download statistic is intriguing.

This is an all-time low for challenges. Low-effort builders farming upvotes with low-effort challenges. Many of the long time greats are starting to refuse to participate in them because it's become such a joke.

I noticed your Bush challenge uses a screen grab of somebody's bush plane, but the upload itself is just a single block. Didn't mention who built the plane, didn't list it as a successor. Total violation of the rules.

And here you are, complaining about a lack of upvotes? Well, make better stuff because this ain't it, chief.

I only mod thumbnails for text

@APilotOfPlanes Things are different now that people are allowed to modify thumbnails, the rule I am certain of is that the thumbnail must be a picture of the downloadable creation.

As for your upvotes, I dont know what to tell you. Sometimes they love you, sometimes they dont. Building something that looks great and taking good pictures of it will always get upvotes but you are going to discover that quality doesnt really equal upvotes. High rated, pretty planes that fly like crap. Awesome builds that somehow slip by without getting any attention. It's not fair, but that's how it is.

@F104Deathtrap look. What is it that I am supposed to do? If you don't tell me what you expect, nothing changes.

@F104Deathtrap I only complained about the upvotes because for a previous challenge that I did one month ago, I did basically the exact same thing (with a different topic of course) and it got more than twice the upvotes. I don't see any difference between the two, except that I credited the plane in the comments except in the description.

@F104Deathtrap For the record, I have credited the creator of the plane in the second pinned comment below. I'll put it at the top. Thank you for the comment. Also, you said I should make it a successor?

@CenturyAerospace I agree. I'm not going to leave any time soon so we'll have at least 1 person that is staying. New people are coming on too so we got that

"Parents don't really understand the concept of a gaming community."
Whenever they SEE the WORD "game", they go mad at you even if you are like, grown up or stuff.
I was 19 and ... well, I grew to be sneaky and my parents grew to simply not care what I am doing.
I don't know. It's as if they expect you to be studying all the time.
But video games are pretty bad. And the stereotype for video games? CounterStrike. Stuff like Legends of Leagues (intentional. but isn't this name good too?). World of Tanks.
These are mildly violent (ESRB rating! not my opinion) and are heavy games with lots of involvement and excitement. Priority over boring math homework can easily be made by students.

    (hear mom footstep)
Gimme a sec I'll pretend I am making my math cheatsheet
    \cos^{2}{x}=\frac{1}{2}(1-\cos{2x}
    ehh ... where are we?
Oh. Yes. Even as they educate you about "video games are bad", this is not even a typical video game. It actually let you "think" and expand creativity: How do you start a piston engine (in its dead state) without a starter?
I have been fiddling with this question as I come back to this game and focus on perpetual motion devices (that does not use a infinitely larger input).
There's articles out there that actually talk about parental distrust and stuff, and various parents also differ from each other (lol. parents ARE objects, after all. they are animated objects that talk and do stuff)
But if you ask any parents about whether they distrust their kid they usually say "no". Those articles (at least one of them) also claims that this distrust lie in their sub-conscious.
Anyway, I had burnt enough time on this.

"why do challenges with 36 upvotes and 478 downloads only have 9 entries?"
I am not sure where the 469 downloads went. Perhaps they never really started work, 10% of those that started work did nit finish it, and the 10% that finished it did not upload it.

    @APilotOfPlanes
    You are not alone.

Earlier yesterday I saw a 3.1K part passion build (built with android) and found its 150 upvotes ... impressive, but sad.
It's a GAME. And you paid for it. Then you work like a horse or something for four month to get that done. It's true that Simpleplanes allow you to export models now, so not all efforts are wasted.

I too had a passion build. And for me it's ... I don't even think it had more than 10 upvotes.
So now I no longer care about upvotes. But when I release hard-working builds (months and years, although discontinuous) they had all too often end up with zero upvotes, because one or more parts of them use outdated stuff (or whatever random excuse they come up. Ask any gold guy.)
Fuselage wings ... yeah, it's cool, but I don't have the time for that. Plus it's draggy and heavy.
So you then mod it so it's dragless & massless.
Why not just ... get Autodesk 123D (the free version of the legendary Autocad)? Why not Tinkercad? Librecad?
You will me making TRUE pieces of art and mechanic. You will say goodbye to the horrendous designer interface available. Plus, you often end up being able to 3D print it.

For me, the only reason to NOT switch is because I have bought it. Although it's not my money (I got $1.5K from high school scholarship). And time -- I don't have time for big builds or extended CAD sessions.

Right now there is this same swarm of people "ruining" Simplerockets 2 before it even got itself stabilized.
It's SIMPLE PLANES, DUDE. Not "artistic planes". Although we all kind of appreciate those sophisticated ones.

(as a matter of fact, more than one people is actually using outside tool to aid the construction of their crafts. Not mods -- entirely outside tools.)

What am I looking for here?
I've always been a mostly vanilla player, though some of the Funky Trees stuff got me interested -- it's what I call "enhanced vanilla".

Four years and I still didn't see the release of a double-side "block" rotator. I still see pistons with the same wobbly connection that it had years ago. Aerodynamics is nonsense. Car engine acceleration is ridiculous. Air intake still does not take airspeed into count. Still no overheating from friction. They had added useful parts are the small rotators, the gyro, the helicopter stuff, and the cannon, but they never made any part of existing items any better than ... well, 3, 4, or 5 years ago. The only fix I noticed, is from the "new" propeller engines -- 3 years ago it will break if you try to rotate it (by a rotator) while it is spinning. That is fixed.
The game is broken, dude. They just throw more parts at it and expect it to "become better". It haven't.

@APilotOfPlanes There's that too, which I think is partly because they didn't grow up with this whole atmosphere. It's not normal for them because they didn't grow up in a global society in which you can communicate with random people from around the world.

@KnightOfRen @AsteroidAsteroidTheBook @KangaKangaTheRoo As I come to think of it, we are all silver and above. Why would we be internet predators if we show our at least half-decent knowledge and passion for aviation and we spend hundreds if not thousands of hours mastering the game and contributing to the community? Parents don't really understand the concept of a gaming community.

My parents can be like this too, but it’s generally because I have 3 younger siblings who are at least 5 years younger than me. So I’m not even allowed things like discord, reddit, Insta snap etc which sucks bc all my friends have those things :/
All in all, I have to agree with both of you lol.
