Train Map Questions

I understand that making train maps in this game is currently kind of time-consuming. This is because the rails need to be placed individually and correctly positioned. But what if we could fix that?

In Garry's Mod, rails used to be placed by hand in the map editor, which made them slow to place, and often times rough, making trains bounce off easily. The solution was that a pack of map assets, props, were made of complete rail sections. That way, rails could easily be added to a map, curves were much smoother, and trains didn't bounce off as easily.

What if we did the same in SP? We could very simply model a bunch of rail pieces, with ballast and the surface on which the trains ride included, and piece them together in the map editor. Curves, gradients, and long straightaways all easily plopped into a map.

I know nothing about Unity, but this seems like a very simple task to me. I know enough about Blender to make the models, but I have a few questions:

  1. Would the intersection between pieces be likely to cause invisible bumps, and if so, how could this be fixed?

  2. Can I create a collision mesh that is differently shaped than the model? (This is so I can add railroad ties to the model, but still have a smooth surface for the trains to ride on.)

    Edit: I did know about the map plugin, I just didn't know that it was doing the same exact thing that I was thinking of, only better.

    actually, @destroyerP is making a plugin that adds train tracks around all the islands on PC. He's getting help from someone else who has made tracks (that from what I understand) act like spline points in Trainz games.
