Some historical explanations about the "Komet red."
In early May 1944, the Ekdo-16 was declared operational and the first engagement with Allied aircraft occurred May 13 Major Späte, took off from Bad Zwischenahn with the V 163B-41 (PK + QL) .It launched in pursuit of two Republic P-47 "Thuderbolt" flying near his land. As he placed in attack position, his engine died and he had to escape. Fortunately for
He said the P-47 is not suspected nothing! Späte had to wait 2 or 3 minutes before you can turn on the rocket. Meanwhile, it champing at the bit distant already seeing the over 5000 mètres.Lorsqu'il lit his rocket, the Me 163 quickly jumped and caught the Americans. Suddenly, a whole filled his P-47 viewfinder Revi-16B. He was about to release a burst of two 30mm cannon when the left collapsed violently. Focused on his prey, Späte had neglected to monitor their speedometer and compressibility he crossed the threshold. After recovering control of his unit, he was left him enough fuel to try a new interception.
Very frustrated, burned Späte its remaining propellants returning to its base.
The P-47, who had suspected nothing, quietly continued their road!
The 41-V working prototype with which the interception took place, had a size characteristic: it was the only "Komet" entirely painted red. It appears that no order was given not to apply that color. Young mechanics of Ekdo-16 were at the origin of this initiative.
They explained that this color reflected the mindset of their unit. For them, the red would be a chance to pledge at the first interception performed by this revolutionary fighter. Indeed, it was the same color as well as the famous Red Baron Fokker, Manfred Von Richthofen the ace of the First World War. Some time after the interception, he received a classic camouflage livery. On takeoff, dump the wheel truck imperatively before 250 mph. give me advice glass.
