in 1972 the Santa Fe railroad purchesed a number of sd40-2s, these locos where put into sevice as road switchers until later they where replaced by the GE -8s. most of these locos where ether sold to leasing companys or small railroads. Some of the Santa Fe sd40-2s where demoted to yard service like this one iv built. santa fe added to some locos ditch lights, becons, and they also moved the headlights to the front of the short hood from the top of the cab.
