Auto Credit Based on Mikan's Nakajima Type 97 Ko Ki-27 ‘Nate’

The Otsu modification was a double seated conversion from Ko. Other modificaiton, the Hei and Tei, were simply Ko and Otsu, respectively, but mounting the Hitachi Ha-13a-III engine instead of Ha-13a-I. These late war versions began their production just as the war came to a close.

Legacy
Masuzawa Masatoshi in 1945 piloted a Ki-79b to defend an airfield, he managed to shoot down one Hellcat and return safely.

Salvaged Ki-79s were the first planes the Indonesian airforce flew in their campaign to liberated from the Dutch.
