The A-4G Skyhawk, operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), was a carrier-capable variant of the Douglas A-4 series, specifically tailored for naval aviation aboard HMAS Melbourne. Known for its compact size, agility, and ease of maintenance, the A-4G served as a reliable platform for both air defense and light attack roles within the Fleet Air Arm.

Derived from the A-4F, the A-4G retained much of its predecessor’s performance but featured modifications suited for carrier operations. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney J52-P-8A turbojet engine, the A-4G had a top speed of 675 mph (1,086 km/h) and could carry up to 9,900 lbs (4,490 kg) of ordnance across five external hardpoints. Its weapons suite included two fixed Colt Mk 12 20mm cannons, effective in close-range engagements.

Key features and upgrades of the A-4G included:

Air-to-air capability, including carriage of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles for fleet defense.

Structural enhancements for carrier operations, such as reinforced landing gear and tail hook.

Retained ground attack capabilities while prioritizing air interception duties.

The A-4G was flown by No. 805 and No. 816 Squadrons RAN, operating from the deck of HMAS Melbourne throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. Despite its age, the Skyhawk proved to be a versatile and cost-effective solution for Australia’s naval aviation needs, excelling in training, interception, and maritime support missions.
