In 1975, the Northern Galaxy Railway introduced a new type of train using chopper voltage regulation control, which was one of the most advanced trains at the time. It had better performance than the old model trains controlled by resistors and saved nearly 20% energy. The train consists of two carriages with a cab, one of which is equipped with a motor and pantograph, and the other is a trailer. In 1985, the train was repainted. After entering the 21st century, Northern Galaxy Railway carried out a large-scale renovation of KT4A trains, replacing larger front windows, LED directional screens, and traction equipment, and installing a large number of accessibility facilities. Only a small number of trains remained unchanged. Starting from 2023, with the introduction of the 6000 series trains, KT4A and KT4G except for the 001 train set will gradually be sold, and will completely disappear from the Northern Galaxy Railway's lines in the winter of 2026. They have accompanied residents along the railway for over forty years and are an important symbol of the Northern Galaxy Railway.
