History
Development: The Junkers Ju 99, nickname "Kanonvogel" (Cannon Bird), was conceived in late 1942 as a response to the growing need for a long-range heavy fighter capable of intercepting Allied bombers and performing deep penetration missions over enemy territory. Drawing inspiration from the success of the Ju 88 and the shortcomings of earlier heavy fighters like the Bf 110, the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium) requested a faster, better-armed alternative that could also engage in ground attack missions.
