In 1954, Lockheed would pave the way for future fighter programs. Sleek, fast, and durable, the F-104 Starfighter entered the warring scene. It was one of the “century series” of fighter aircraft in the USAF. Lockheed did it, they created a fighter capable of Mach 2. Designed for Air Superiority, the F-104 would find itself in mostly an interceptor roll with bombing capability. It was a revolutionary concept. Starfighters flew higher and faster than any other fighter at the time. Lockheed learned from Korea and implemented on what they learned. The F-104 served for 11 years in the USAF and longer in other Air Forces like the Luftwaffe. USAF Tactical Air Command utilized the F-104C in Vietnam to intercept, escort, and air support. The Vietnamese chose to avoid combat with the Starfighter in their MiG-17 and MiG-21. In Vietnam, 2,937 sorties and lost only 5 Starfighters. Its Widowmaker name came from other countries operations.
