SAAB 340 is a short-range twin turboprop aircraft with a capacity of 33 to 37 passengers. It was jointly developed and produced by SAAB Sweden and Fairchild USA, and the production right was completely controlled by SAAB in 1987. Saab 340 stopped production in 1999 and produced 459.
KLM Cityhopper is a regional subsidiary of KLM (part of Air France KLM). Its headquarters, Conville Building, is located in the square near Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. It operates KLM's short haul flights in Europe. Therefore, it shares the air traffic control and IATA code "KL" used by ICAO code "KLM", ticket use and flight information display with the parent company. Currently, there are about 44 destinations for Royal Dutch City Short haul Airlines, but they will change every year due to the parent company's scheduling.
Royal Dutch City Short haul Flight 433 is a regular flight from Amsterdam, the Netherlands to Cardiff, Wales, with Saab 340B. On April 4, 1994, three people, including the captain, were killed when they crashed in an emergency landing. The plane that caused the accident took off from Schiphol Airport at 12:19 local time in Amsterdam. Eleven minutes after takeoff, the pilot mistakenly thought that the oil pressure of No. 2 engine was insufficient due to the false lighting of the warning light due to short circuit. When the assistant pilot took out the checklist according to the procedure, read out and executed the above instructions, the captain did not follow the standard procedure and, without informing the assistant pilot, gradually reduced the power of No. 2 engine to idle to protect the engine. According to the checklist instructions, because the oil pressure displayed on the oil pressure gauge was greater than 30 pounds per square inch (PSI), the crew decided to continue flying.
The pilots decided to climb because of the storm ahead. After climbing to 17000 feet, the pilot found that the plane could not continue climbing, thought that there was something wrong with the plane, and requested to return to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The reason why the aircraft could not climb was that the captain put Engine 2 in idle mode, which resulted in insufficient thrust. However, it seemed that neither of the two pilots found the problem. When turning back for the final approach (90 feet high), the captain decided to fly again because the speed was too slow and the plane deviated from the runway to the right. The reason why the plane deviates to the right is that engine 2 on the right is in idle mode, while engine 1 on the left is running normally, so the plane can be pushed to the right.
The decision to re fly required the aircraft to climb, so the captain gave engine 1 full thrust. However, due to the extreme imbalance of thrust on both sides caused by the right engine in idle gear, the aircraft turned violently to the right and stalled, and finally fell to the ground at an angle of 80 degrees. Three of the 24 people on board, including the captain, died; Among the 21 survivors, 9, including the copilot, were seriously injured. At the same time, due to the amnesia caused by the crash, the copilot was unable to recall the incident.
