The Bombardier CRJ100 and CRJ200 (formerly the Canadair CRJ100 and CRJ200) are a family of regional aircraft designed and manufactured by Bombardier Airlines between 1991 and 2006, and are part of the Bombardier CRJ family of aircraft. The CRJ was the second Canadian-built airliner, following the Avro Canada C102 jetliner prototype (which never entered service).
This plane was built on the Bombardier Challenger 600 series commercial jets. An initial effort to produce a larger 36-seater version of the aircraft - known as the Challenger 610E - ended in 1981. Shortly after Canadair was privatized and sold to Bombardier, work on the project resumed. On May 10, 1991, the first of three CRJ100 prototypes made its maiden flight. A year later, the German company Lufthansa put it into service as the first customer of this aircraft model. This content is copied from Tayareh's blog.
The initial version, the CRJ100, was soon replaced by another model, the CRJ200, which was largely identical to the CRJ100 except for the installation of efficient turbofan engines, which allowed for lower fuel consumption, increased altitude and a higher cruise speed.
During the 1990s, various versions and models of this type of aircraft were produced and put into service. In the late 1990s, a more elongated model of this aircraft was built, called the CRJ700. After that, the larger CRJ900 and CRJ1000 models were also built.
Finally, in 2006, the production of both CRJ100 and CRJ200 models ended.
