INFO:

The Skyhawk is a delta-wing aircraft powered by a turbojet that was produced by the Douglas Aircraft Company, and later by McDonnell Douglas.

The A-4 fought in the Vietnam War serving in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It was the aircraft that performed the most missions in the conflict. [1] The Blue Angels flight demonstration team used the A-4.

Outside the United States, the A-4 also served in the armed forces of nine other countries. The Skyhawks of the Israeli Air Force fought in the Arab-Israeli conflicts and the A-4s of the Argentine Navy and Air Force fought in the Falklands War. The A-4 continues in service in Argentina and Brazil.

BRIEF HISTORY:

The Skyhawk was designed by American aeronautical engineer Ed Heinemann of the Douglas Aircraft Company in response to a call from the United States Navy for an attack jet aircraft to replace the older Douglas A-1 Skyraider. [2 ] Heinemann opted for a design that kept size, weight and complexity to a minimum. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the weight specification that the Navy had given. It had a wing so compact that it did not need to be folded for transport on aircraft carriers. The diminutive Skyhawk soon received the nicknames "Scooter", "Kiddiecar", "Bantam Bomber", "Tinker Toy Bomber", and for its nimble performance "Heinemann's Hot-Rod". [3]

The United States Navy issued a contract for the type on June 12, 1952, [4] and the first prototype flew out of Edwards Air Force Base, California on June 22, 1954. [5] Deliveries to the United States Navy and Marine Corps (VA-72 and VMA-224 squadrons respectively) began in late 1956. [4].[4]
