In 1960, this was a low-altitude, high-speed interceptor/attack aircraft designed by Soviet Frontline Aviation for rapid interception and nuclear strikes against Western Europe. It featured a vertically-stacked twin-engine configuration powered by two R-25 engines and employed a tailless delta wing aerodynamic layout. Its maximum speed was Mach 2.5 at high altitude and Mach 1.4 at low altitude (indicated airspeed).
Test pilot Vyacheslav Barannikov(bvvd) stated that the Su-12 was the fastest fighter he ever flew. He described the sensation when engaging afterburner: "It felt like a bull kicking me in the back." He also famously remarked, "When I flew that thing into the sky, I felt like I could see the mother of my colleague Anton" (Anton being an employee at the Sukhoi test flight facility) – as recounted by the Soviet test pilot himself.
After the Vietnam War, the Soviet Union obtained F-4 Phantom wreckage provided by Vietnam. They reverse-engineered the AN/APQ-59 radar and AIM-7 missiles, ultimately developing the Type-5 experimental radar. This radar was eventually installed on the Su-12, providing the Soviet Union with its primary beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat capability at the time. – See the photo below showing the Type-5 radar undergoing testing on the Su-12 (aircraft number 01).

@j20m 感谢🙏🏻
