The M10 tank destroyer was commonly referred to as "TDs" by U.S. Army units, and the U.S. Army used the term TDs to refer to all tank destroyers at the time, while its official name was the 3in GMC M10s.The U.K. was also equipped with a large number of M10 tank destroyers under Lend-Lease, known as the Wolverine. The M10 Tank Destroyer was the US Army's most famous tank destroyer of World War II, and was a great success in the North African campaign - its M7 gun was able to penetrate the armour of German tanks at long range. However, its heavy chassis did not allow it to move at high speeds. So in early 1944, the US developed the M18 Hellcat to compensate for the M10's shortcomings. In the Normandy Campaign in the later part of the war, the M10 was gradually replaced by the M36 Tank Destroyer because the main gun of the Tank Destroyer could not penetrate the front armour of the German Leopard tank. Nevertheless, the M10 Tank Destroyer was still of some importance, so it remained in service until the end of the war. In the Pacific War against Japan, the M10 Tank Destroyer was still responsible for traditional infantry support duties. However, the encirclement tactics adopted by the Japanese made the M10 Tank Destroyer more vulnerable to damage than a fully armoured tank. The open turret of the M10 Jagdpanther also became a weak point for enemy infantry, who often threw grenades into the turret, destroying the tank; at the same time, its turret was designed to rotate manually, and it took as long as two minutes to rotate the turret 360°, which was inconvenient for combat.
