Grigorovich Ivanov (Low wing)
This proposed airplane was one of the competitors in the 1936 "Ivanov" Program.
AG-1 - Dorsal .30 cal ShKAS machine gun
History:
In 1936, the Soviet High Command announced a replacement aircraft program for most reconnaissance such as the old Polikarpov R-5, and R-Z biplanes. The Soviet High Command announced the Voiskovoy Samolet / tactical aircraft program (short-range bomber, reconnaissance, and attack plane). The announcement of this competition is often known as the "Ivanov" Program based on telegrams delivered to aircraft designers with the signature of "Ivanov" alias Stalin himself. The contestants were Tupolev, Grigorovich, Polikarpov, Neman, Ilyushin, and Kochyerigin. Grigorovich decided to design two versions, high-wing and low-wing. The selected power plant for the program was the Mikulin AM-34FRN engine. The low-wing Grigorovich Ivanov had the engine in the nose, with a very long "glasshouse" canopy behind it. In the rear of the canopy was a mount for a single .30 cal ShKAS machine gun. Two more ShKAS machine guns were in the wing firing outside the propeller arc. Unexpectedly, the Soviet High Command decided to change the selected engine from the Mikulin AM-34FRN to the Shvetsov M-62 radial engine of 1,000 horsepower. Grigorovich was disappointed in the change of power plant, so he temporarily suspended his work.
