the 3V8-HUH was just a dream (maybe literally)
told you this siren was coming. i already had this on my saves on the day of uploading the cursed sentry, but i have to give my tag list participants a day off...
RESUME
Model 3V8 is a single-rotor omnidirectional electromechanical siren produced by Sentry Siren since 1980. It is the smallest model that Sentry Siren offers, as well as the most inexpensive. It has been a mainstay in Sentry Siren's catalogue since its introduction and has seen use in many places for a wide variety of purposes.
HISTORY
Model 10V was introduced in 1980 following the success of the earlier Model 10V2T, alongside the rest of Sentry Siren's 1980 lineup which included the Model 10V, Model 5V, and Model 20V2T. As early as the year 1999, a variant of Model 3V8 named Model 3V8-H was introduced, built with horns as standard instead of a louver. In 2003, the Centennial Correctional Facility in Canon City, CO, contacted Sentry Siren and requested a model to warn of prison escapes and other serious situations at the facility; because the facility was relatively small (at 40 acres) and was made of sound-deadening thick concrete, Sentry Siren's standard models would not be effective.
As a result, Sentry Siren created Model 3V8-HC, a variant of Model 3V8-H built with the pointed edge horns used by Model 40V2T. The Model 3V8-HC at the Centennial Correctional Facility is the only example ever built: it is unknown if this siren is still in service. Model 3V8-HC can be seen as the predecessor to modern Model 3V8-H units; Sentry Siren redesigned its sirens' horns in the early 2010s with pointed ends—similar to those of the Model 3V8-HC, albeit at a greater angle—to prevent snow and debris from entering.
In 2015, the battery-backup variant of the 3V8 was introduced, named Model 3V8-H-B. Model 3V8 is still produced by Sentry Siren and is a popular choice for fire departments and small communities where a larger, more expensive model would be unnecessary. The base model is the most popular option due to its low price, followed by Model 3V8-H. Model 3V8-H-B is the least popular of the 3 as it was introduced relatively recently, and its additional cost may not justify its performance compared to Sentry Siren's larger DC-powered sirens like Model 16V1T-B and Model 14V-B.
DESIGN
Like all of Sentry Siren's models, Model 3V8 has a basic design. The 8-port single-tone rotor and stator (no other port configuration is available), heavily inspired by the Sterling Siren Model M, are placed above a 6-legged intake assembly with a cone at the center of the base to project the sound from the intake outwards. The siren is driven by a 5 hp 208-230/460 V AC 1/3 ph motor above the rotor and stator. Model 3V8 sirens with 1 ph motors use a centrifugal regenerative brake that slows the rotor down rapidly when it reaches a low enough rpm to recharge the motor's capacitor.1 ph units can be distinguished from 3 ph units by the taller motor enclosure. The motor is placed inside a cylindrical weatherproof vented enclosure above the siren.
A rain shield is installed above the enclosure to prevent water accumulation. The rain shield is topped with an eyebolt for easy installation of the siren. Model 3V8 as standard uses a louver that separates the motor enclosure and stator. The louver shields the rotor and stator from the weather and helps guide the siren's sound downwards. The motor enclosure, stator, and intake openings are covered with mesh screens to prevent debris from entering. The siren's simple design allows it to be both inexpensive, easy to maintain, and long-lasting. The siren is primarily constructed out of steel; a corrosion-resistant stainless-steel version (Model 3V8-SS; suitable for areas like coastal cities where the salty air would destroy the siren rapidly) and painted fiberglass version of Model 10V (Model 3V8-F) are also offered. Model 3V8 reaches 107 dB at 100 ft according to Sentry Siren.
3V8-H
Model 3V8-H is a variant of Model 3V8 with 8 horns attached to the stator ports instead of a louver between the housing enclosure and stator. While Model 3V8-H is slightly more expensive, the horns increase the siren's performance to 109 dB at 100 ft. The horn openings are covered with mesh screens to prevent debris from entering. Model 7V8 is similar in appearance to Model 7V8 but is shorter in height due to Model 3V8's smaller rotor. Apart from the added horns, Model 3V8-H is identical to Model 3V8.
3V8-H-B
Model 3V8-H-B is a DC-powered variant of Model 3V8 that uses a 4 hp 42 V DC motor instead of a 5 hp AC motor; this allows the siren to run on battery backup if AC power is lost. Model 3V8-H-B can run solely on battery backup for approximately 30 minutes. Model 3V8-H-B is built with horns as standard and is not offered with a louver. It uses the same motor housing as a 3 ph Model 3V8. Model 3V8-H-B can be distinguished by sound from Model 3V8 and its other derivates by its rapid non-linear windup; it is otherwise identical to Model 3V8-H and performs identically.
3V8-HC
Model 3V8-HC is a custom siren built for the Centennial Correctional Facility in Canon City, CO. Model 3V8-HC is identical to Model 3V8-H but shares the same pointed-end horns used for Model 40V2T. This helps disperse sound both outwards and downwards to penetrate the thick sound-deadening concrete used by the Centennial Correctional Facility. The Model 40V2T/Model 3V8-HC horns curve at a greater angle than the standard horns used on other modern Sentry Siren models. Model 3V8-HC is otherwise identical to Model 3V8-H.
