About Monarch Airlines:
Monarch Airlines, simply known as Monarch, was a British charter and scheduled airline founded by Bill Hodgson and Don Peacock and financed by the Swiss Sergio Mantegazza family. The company later became a low-cost airline in 2004 before abandoning charter flying completely. The airline's headquarters were based at London–Luton, and it had operating bases at Birmingham, Leeds/Bradford, London–Gatwick and Manchester.
When Monarch entered administration in 2017, it was the biggest airline collapse in UK history up to that point, leaving nearly 100,000 passengers and holidaymakers stranded. However, on 23 September 2019, Thomas Cook also collapsed, leaving 150,000 people stranded, and went on to become the largest UK airline ever to collapse. The airline held a United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Type A Operating Licence. This licence allowed Monarch to carry passengers, cargo, and mail on aircraft with 20 or more seats.

About the McDonnell Douglas DC-10:
The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is an American trijet wide-body aircraft manufactured by McDonnell Douglas. The DC-10 was intended to succeed the DC-8 for long-range flights. It first flew on August 29, 1970; it was introduced on August 5, 1971, by American Airlines.
The trijet has two turbofans on underwing pylons and a third one at the base of the vertical stabilizer. The twin-aisle layout has a typical seating for 270 in two classes. The initial DC-10-10 had a 3,500-nautical-mile [nmi] (6,500 km; 4,000 mi) range for transcontinental flights. The DC-10-15 had more powerful engines for hot and high airports. The DC-10-30 and –40 models (with a third main landing gear leg to support higher weights) each had intercontinental ranges of up to 5,200 nmi (9,600 km; 6,000 mi). The KC-10 Extender (based on the DC-10-30) is a tanker aircraft that was primarily operated by the United States Air Force.

About G-DMCA:
G-DMCA was the first and only DC-10 to be delivered to the then-charter Monarch Airlines. The aircraft was also the first fully long-haul aircraft, and was in use before Monarch got itself its A330’s. After the first A330 was delivered, the DC-10 in Monarch’s fleet became fully obsolete, and was retired in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks. The registration of the plane was G-DMCA - named after Donald McAngus, a long serving company director. The aircraft was preserved in the Runway Visitor Park near EGCC, along with 4 other aircraft.
This specific aircraft had its first flight on 25/11/1980, is 44.5 years old, and was tested at Long Beach Airport (LGB/KLGB), with an unknown test registration. Its MSN is 48266, and its line number is 348. It was broken up at Manchester Ringway Airport (MAN/EGCC) in November of 2003 and its nose section was preserved at the same airport.
This specific aircraft was in service with the following airlines before being broken up:
Bold is our subject.
- Zambia Airways, from 30/7/1984 - 12/3/1996, with the registration N3016Z
- The aircraft was named “Nkwazi”, the Chichewa word for the African Fish Eagle, the national bird of Zambia.
- The aircraft was originally ordered by EgyptAir in the 70’s but was left as a white-tail and un-completed.
- Monarch Airlines, from 12/3/1996 - 27/10/2001, with the registration G-DMCA
- The registration was named after Donald McAngus, a long serving company director. The aircraft was supposed to have the registration G-DMON, although that got scrapped because it looks like the word “Demon”.
- It was stored at Manchester Airport and was broken up in November of 2003. The nose and forward fuselage section was preserved however, and continues to live on at the Runway Visitor Park, along with the only Avro RJX [G-IRJX], A Concorde [G-BOAC], a BEA Trident [G-AWZK] and a RAF Nimrod MR2 [XV231]
It was painted into the “new” livery in June of 2004 which was unveiled in 2002. You can actually visit the inside of the aircraft, which has since been converted into a meeting / class room
