The Bo-23 Krokodil was developed as a gift for the Soviet Union from the US based aircraft manufacturer Boeing. In total 500 planes were built. The aircraft’s design was based on a scrapped version of the B-25 Mitchell medium bomber, with Soviet doctrine in mind the designers at Boeing made the Bo-23 a sort of heavy ground attack aircraft. Giving it 5 offensive machine guns as well as two defensive machine guns, external gun pods could be fitted increasing the total machine guns to 11. A range of explosive ordances could be carried with it’s impressive 4,000 pound bomb load.

Soviet crews appreciated the aircraft’s reliability but where quick to point out it’s flaws. In particular the Bo-23’s nightmarish engines. When Soviet mechanics first opened the engine cowls they were shocked to find out that what was thought to be a four engined plane, actually contained eight engines. To get around the horrendous power to weight ratio of the plane designers at Boeing decided to double up each engine for more power, this in turn led to poor fuel economy and as one crew found out a high risk of catching fire
