EM-19 Shoebill

0 gene1  2 months ago

The EM-19 “Shoebill” is a United States Electronic Warfare Aircraft designed in 2002. Making its first flight in 2011 the Shoebill was the first CSAF (chaff saturating and filter) production aircraft. Developed and produced by Adurill its primary misson is to saturate the battlefield in specialized chaff to prevent enemy RF guided missle and radar usage. Using a variaton of the E-3 AWACS radar dish it then fliters out the chaff and relays RF threats (Aircraft or missle) to other USAF aircraft. While the exact process is top secret, it is assumed the EM-19 does this but filtering out the frequency of the scheduled chaff and then detecting what RF signals are left. The exact effectiveness of the Shoebill is also secret but it has been know to be a very potent aircraft in the realm of CAS (close air support). The Shoebill has great loitter time while also being able to keep up with faster jets. The estimated cost of the EM-19 is around 167,000,000 USD per aircraft. Due to the high cost and reported high maintence cost it is estimated that only around 27 of these aircraft were ever made. The EM-19 and the CSAF misson in general is still highly secretive.
