First fictional fighter on this account. Made entirely from my imagination in about 2 hours.

Features:

  • Two AA-2 Atoll-D missiles
  • Two 37mm N-37L cannon
  • Two 190mm TRS-190 unguided rockets
  • Flaps (VTOL)
  • Brake chute (AG-1)
  • Drop tank (AG-2)
  • Custom landing gear

History:

As I said, this plane is fictional. So the story is fake.

In January of 1961, the Soviet Union ordered several design bureaus to create very fast types of aircraft able to intercept high-flying US bombers and spy planes and to be equipped with the brand-new K-13 (AA-2 Atoll) air-to-air missile. The Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau took up this order and set to work at once. Because it gained essential experience with the Ye-150 series in the mid 1950’s, it used the same outstanding Tumansky R-15B-300 afterburning turbojet engine used on the Ye-152-1 and -2, the brand-new Tupolev Tu-123 reconnaissance drone, and the MiG-25 “Foxbat” which was in development at the time. The shock cone was retained, and the main wings were now swept instead of delta. The sweep of the vertical stabilizer was increased, and a brake chute was added. For weapons, two of the required K-13 missiles were attached on pylons somewhat-near the fuselage. Outboard of these were two 190mm TRS-190 unguided rockets for use against ground targets, bombers, or spy planes. In addition to these powerful weapons, two 37mm N-37L cannon were fitted low-down on the fuselage sides. Two large air brakes were also put on the rear fuselage. The landing gear was enlarged a little and strengthened to carry the weight on the ground. The prototype was designated Ye-174, and was fully completed and airworthy by April of 1962. Testing then begun in August of 1962, and the prototype showed exceptional speed of 1,857 mph at 57,850 feet. Suddenly, without warning, the whole program was cancelled for no apparent reason. The prototype was stored in a hanger for 11 months before being scraped. Mikoyan-Gurevich decided to keep the papers of the Ye-174 to remember it by. Unfortunately, by then all blueprints and documentation of the experiment Ye-174 were lost in the archives.
