Hauganes AeroElectric is currently test flying its QAF* Quiet Advanced Fan* demonstrator and will soon fly it at air displays and other corporate events to gain entry into the fast developing Electric GA sector. It is intended to install the fan in a more standard airframe in the near future.
The company chose a small pod and boom airframe to showcase and test the fan, which is currently mounted in the open, with no ducting; This demonstrates the thin, compact design and it’s simple installation, essentially making it “plug and play”. In this un-ducted form, the fan unit withstands the same FOD impact tests that turbofans must pass: this is thanks to the use of modern composites, reinforced with Woven Titanium Fibres* for added strength.
TAKE OFF
VTOL down halfway to apply Half Flaps. Throttle up to 70% and rotate at 240mph. Once airborne, VTOL to centre then raise undercarriage. Set Throttle and Trim as required. There is a slight drift to the right during take-off roll, but no need to correct.
LANDING
Reduce Throttle to 5%-10%, lower Undercarriage and set VTOL half way down (half flaps) for initial descent. On final approach, set VTOL fully down (full flaps). On touchdown, apply Brakes.
TAXIING
Use low Throttle and Yaw (twist grip on side-sticks)
COCKPIT
Console has a suite of analogue instruments on the centre section, and three prototype MFDs to either side. These show a mix of animated analogue gauges and digital instruments that are under development and monitoring.
Controls consist of central Undercarriage up/down lever, twin Flap levers, a large Throttle lever, twin Trim levers, buttons for beacon lights. Pilot and co-Pilot have a side-stick for Roll and Pitch, with the twist grip used for taxi steering.
AG1 Red ground strobes.
AG2 White strobes.
AG3 Red/Green/White running lights.
AG8 Landing Lights enable/disable: Default AG8 on sets landing lights to “auto”. Lights switch off automatically when undercarriage is raised, and on when lowered. AG8 off disables lights completely.
Retro-ish looking fuselage/booms paired with the fan unit.
