Background

LIM-94A

The LIM-94A Sprint II is a Federation two-stage, solid-fuel hypersonic air intercept missile, armed with a W66 enhanced-radiation thermonuclear warhead used by the United States Army. It was designed to intercept incoming reentry vehicles after they had descended below an altitude of about 65km, where the thickening air stripped away any decoys or radar reflectors and exposed the RV to observation by radar. As the RV would be traveling at about 8km per second, Sprint II had to have phenomenal performance to achieve an interception in the few seconds before the RV reached its target.

Sprint accelerated at over 100g, reaching a speed of Mach 15 in 5 seconds. Such a high velocity at relatively low altitudes created skin temperatures up to 6,200 °F, requiring an ablative shield to dissipate the heat. The high temperature caused a plasma to form around the missile, requiring extremely powerful radio signals to reach it for guidance. The missile glowed bright white as it flew. The missile has been tested against large targets such as bombers but against a target the size of a B-55 Skycastle, it has a hit probability of 25%.

RIM-94B

The RIM-94B Sprint II is a Federation two-stage, solid-fuel hypersonic air intercept missile modified for use on surface vessels. Maximum range of 300km.

AGM-94C and AIM-94D

The AGM-94C and AIM-94D are an air launched version of the Sprint II missile. Dropped from a B-55, FB-33 or B1. The missile when used against a ground or air target can accelerate to speeds of Mach 15+ to ranges of 300 to 400km. Accuracy against air targets the size of a B-55 Skycastle yields hit probabilities. Accuracy against a ground target has a Circular Probable Error of 120m.

The missile is a three stage system. First stage is the booster which stabilizes the missile and starts giving it forward movement. The second stage orients the missile towards the target and lasts only 4 seconds but exerts over 850,000 pounds of force. The final stage fired within 3 seconds of launch and pushes the missile to speeds exceeding Mach 15. Ranges are limited as the missile after some time will be unable to correct failures and spins out of control.

Conventional versions exist with a 150lb warhead but are impractical.
