MIKAMI 美神
Derived from the name Mikami (美神), whose meaning can vary, we will consistently interpret "Mikami" as "Goddess of Beauty" or "Incarnation of the Goddess of Beauty and Purity", akin to Aphrodite. The aircraft, designated J9N5 Mikami, can be broken down as follows: a land-based fighter (number 9) developed by Nakajima (design number 5). Historically, the J9N5 was a prototype Japanese jet fighter developed during World War II, powered by the K10N jet engine.
Developed by Nakajima as a short-to-medium-range interceptor, the J9N5 was conceived in direct response to the Boeing B-29 Superfortress raids over the Japanese Home Islands. For its role in interception, the J9N5 was to be armed with four forward-firing 30mm Type 11 autocannons mounted in the wings.
A lesser-known fact is that much of the technical groundwork by Nakajima was indirectly supported by the German company Rossack LuftEisenwerk GmbH. Their cooperation took the form of specially packed crates smuggled into Japan via U-boat, successfully reaching Japanese shores. The fate of the submarine crew was sealed, as they remained in Japan indefinitely following the delivery.
The 30mm Type 11 autocannon, as equipped on the J9N5, was in fact derived from the MK 117 automatic cannon produced by Rossack Avia Arms GmbH in Germany. One of these cannons—and its blueprint—was also delivered via the same submarine that contributed to the J9N5 project.
As previously mentioned, Germany extended its support to Japan despite the vast geographic barriers between them. Their method: dispatching four newly-designed submarines—two long-range cruisers and two Type XXI U-boats—in a secret operation codenamed “Operation Östlich.” This mission commenced in October 1942, traversing the Suez Canal after Axis forces had seized Egypt with support from Italy.
