The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 is a medium- to long-range , American- made widebody trijet aircraft , developed and produced by McDonnell Douglas (1988–1997) and Boeing (1997–2001). It is based on the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 , but incorporates a longer fuselage, larger wings and winglets, and more modern and powerful engines. The cockpit features EFIS ( CRT ) displays and reduced controls for use by two crew members ( Captain and First Officer ), unlike its predecessor, which required three crew members (Captain, First Officer, and Flight Engineer ).
