About British European Airways:
British European Airways (BEA), formally British European Airways Corporation, was a British airline which existed from 1946 until 1974. BEA operated to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East from airports around the United Kingdom. The airline was also the largest UK domestic operator, serving major British cities, including London, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast, as well as areas of the British Isles such as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. BEA also operated a network of internal German routes between West Berlin and West Germany as part of the Cold War agreements regulating air travel within Germany. The company slogan was Number One in Europe.

About the Hawker Siddeley Trident:
The Hawker Siddeley HS-121 Trident (originally the de Havilland DH.121 and briefly the Airco DH.121) is a British airliner produced by Hawker Siddeley. In 1957, de Havilland proposed its DH.121 trijet design to a British European Airways (BEA) request. By 1960, de Havilland had been acquired by Hawker Siddeley. The Trident's maiden flight happened on 9 January 1962, and it was introduced on 1 April 1964, two months after its main competitor, the Boeing 727. By the end of the programme in 1978, 117 Tridents had been produced. The Trident was withdrawn from service in 1995.

About G-AWZK:
G-AWZK was one of 26 Hawker Siddeley Trident 3B’s to be delivered to the now defunct airline. BEA wanted a trijet that could carry 100+ passengers that could operate from shorter runways, which spawned the aircraft that later became the Trident. These trident were passed onto the newly made British Airways in 1974, in which they were retired by 1986. Despite many Tridents getting scrapped, this one was stored and repurposed at London’s Heathrow International Airport, to serve as a tool for training personnel in areas like de-icing and towing aircraft.
In 2004, Heathrow authorities decided the Trident was “surplus to requirements”, meaning the aircraft was no longer needed for its current role, and was on the threat of disposal and scrapping. The news prompted a campaign by the Trident Preservation Society to save the aircraft, and with the help of both British Airways and Manchester Airport, the Trident was moved by road to Manchester, where it was rebuilt for public viewing by 2007. Since then, it has been one of quite a few attractions at the Manchester Runway Visitor Park.
This specific aircraft had its first flight on 08/01/1971, is currently 54.0 years old, and was tested at Hatfield Aerodrome (HTF/EGTH), with the test registration of G-AWZK, and MSN of 2312, being the 12th Trident 3B to have been built.
This aircraft has been in service with the following airlines:
(Note: subject is in bold)
- British European Airways, from 16/10/1971 - 01/04/1974, with the registration G-AWZK
- British Airways, from 01/04/1974 - 01/11/1985, with registration G-AWZK
- stored at Heathrow 01/11/1985 to be used as a trainer for de-icing and towing procedures until 2001. At these times, it worn the British Airways Landor livery
- Dismantled to Manchester Airport by road in ??/09/2005 in BEA colours, rebuilt and preserved 11/09/2005.
The aircraft has been preserved and is available for public viewing for 20 years (as of the time of posting), and will continue to be shown at the Runway Visitor Park for the foreseeable future.
