The M97A2 drew from experience learned during combat in Japan and Africa. A new MF-T-M2D multifuel turbine replaces the older JP8-powered SF-T-M1A. This is visually apparent from the larger engine housing. The cannon was upgraded to the new M4 120mm gun, which is a heavy modification of the previous M3A10 cannon in many ways. Although it has a slightly shorter barrel, it has a higher chamber pressure and has more velocity, and therefore more penetration.
