Info

The Sukhoi Su-17 (NATO reporting name: Fitter) is a Soviet variable-sweep wing fighter-bomber developed from the earlier Su-7. Introduced in 1970, it was the first Soviet swing-wing aircraft to enter mass production. Designed for ground attack and strike missions, the Su-17 retained the rugged airframe and powerful Lyulka AL-21 turbojet of its predecessor while incorporating variable-geometry wings for improved takeoff, landing, and low-speed handling. It featured enhanced navigation and targeting systems, along with the ability to carry a wider range of ordnance. The Su-17 was exported in various simplified forms under the designations Su-20 and Su-22. It served extensively with Warsaw Pact and allied nations during the Cold War. Its robust design and adaptability allowed it to operate from unprepared airfields. Production continued until the late 1980s, with over 2,800 units built.

The Su-17M4 was the final production variant of the Su-17 series, introduced in the early 1980s. Compared to earlier models, it featured a fixed, non-retractable in-flight refueling probe for extended range, a fully integrated navigation/attack suite, and improved avionics with the Klyon-54 laser rangefinder and target designator. The AL-21F-3 turbojet was refined for greater reliability and fuel efficiency. Aerodynamic changes included a reprofiled nose and improved air intake design. The M4 could employ a broader selection of guided munitions, including precision air-to-ground weapons. Additional upgrades enhanced low-level penetration capability and all-weather operations. This variant became the standard for Soviet and export operators in the 1980s, marking the peak of the Su-17’s development before production ceased.
