Panavia Tornado GR.4 – History
The Tornado GR.4 is the final, modernized ground-attack version of the RAF’s Tornado fleet. It began life as the Tornado GR.1, the UK’s main strike/attack aircraft from the early 1980s, and was upgraded in the late 1990s to stay effective in modern warfare.
⸻
Origins
• Based on the Tornado IDS airframe.
• The GR.4 program started in 1994, upgrading 142 RAF Tornado GR.1s.
• Entered service in 1998.
The upgrade focused on avionics, navigation, sensors, and precision-guided weapon capability.
⸻
Major Improvements Over GR.1
Navigation & Targeting
• Thermal Imaging Airborne Laser Designator (TIALD) → later replaced by Litening III.
• Night-vision goggle compatible cockpit.
• Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) pod for low-light operations.
Weapons
The GR.4 could use modern precision weapons, including:
• Paveway II/III/IV laser-guided bombs
• Brimstone anti-armor missiles
• Storm Shadow long-range cruise missile
• JDAM
• Standard free-fall bombs & cluster munitions (early service)
Survivability
• Improved electronic warfare suite
• RWR (radar warning) upgrades
• Better countermeasure systems
⸻
Combat History
The GR.4 became the RAF’s most important strike jet from 1998 until retirement.
Major Operations
• Operation Telic (Iraq 2003–2009)
Storm Shadow and precision bomb strikes.
• Afghanistan (2009–2014)
Close air support & reconnaissance.
• Operation Ellamy (Libya 2011)
Famous long-range missions from the UK to Libya and back.
• Operation Shader (ISIS, 2014–2018)
Extensive use of Brimstone and Paveway IV.
The GR.4 was known for low-level attack, long endurance, and high accuracy with modern weapons.
⸻
Retirement
• The Tornado GR.4 was retired by the RAF on 31 March 2019, after 37 years of Tornado service.
• Replaced mainly by the F-35B Lightning II and Typhoon (Eurofighter) multirole versions.
