Although Smith Flight Works had established a place for itself on “the map”, it was the F-13 Coyote that made its territory a whole lot bigger.

The company had been known for producing very decent albeit, simplistic aircraft. Notables were the Hudson, Raven, Iris, and Hoodlum but even these (except for the Hoodlum) were only modified for subsequent models that never really established an edge above their counterparts in the global market. The Coyote changed this.

The F-13 was, from the beginning, a wholly new concept. The foremost objective during design was supreme maneuverability. It’s predecessors always had stable payload delivery in mind but in the case of the Coyote, payload was an afterthought. The result was a multirole fighter capable of tight turns with enemy aircraft, and stable “slow flight” for air-to-ground ops.

Beyond excellent combat capability, the F-13 also boasted Smith Flight Works first carrier capable package. This was possible with the older VTOLs, -The Crossbow and Cossack, but they lacked arrestor hooks and safe landings were often a novelty. Finally with the Coyote, global air superiority could be achieved.
