Spiess

The Spiess is the Blessed Germanic Empire's standard maritime patrol and strategic bomber. By the standards of this size and type, it is a relatively common aircraft, as the Empire's bomber doctrine puts emphasis on long-range bombers capable of attacking through unpredictable routes and far beyond enemy lines to force defenses to be spread out. Moreover, the North Sea is, in the post-Crumbling world, a valuable trade highway that the USS regularly attempts to encroach into and which houses the coasts of a few of the Empire's enemies, most notably the neo-Pagan-dominated Scandinavia.

As the Spiess is made to both evade and defend itself against fighters, the aircraft puts performance ahead of payload capacity: compared to the Carcohl's square cross-section, the Spiess' circular fuselage enables it to use curtain bay doors, but has a more limited amount of volume for bombs.
Another appreciable compromise is the engines' push-pull arrangement. This eliminates the drag of having four nacelles and is crucial to making the Spiess a notably maneouverable aircraft, but limits the wings' ability to carry underwing payloads.

The defensive armament consists of two 20 mm cannons in a front-facing dorsal and gondola position, a ventral gondola dual 13 mm heavy machine gun turret, and a tail turret with 4 13 mm heavy machine guns. This particular aircraft is kitted with dual 30 mm chin autocannons, which provides it with considerable offensive power. This piece of kit is most commonly used in patrol aircraft.
