The Polikarpov I-15 "Chaika" ("gull" in Russian), a Soviet single-seat biplane fighter of the 1930s, was famous for its distinctive gull-shaped upper wing, which aimed to improve visibility and reduce drag. Highly maneuverable and armed with four machine guns, it saw extensive action in the Spanish Civil War (where it excelled), the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the early stages of World War II. While eventually outclassed by monoplanes, the "Chaika" and its variants (like the I-15bis and I-153) were significant and iconic biplane fighters.
