The A-4AR Fightinghawk is a modernized variant of the A-4M Skyhawk, developed for the Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina) in the late 1990s through an upgrade program led by Lockheed Martin. Designed to revitalize Argentina’s aging fleet of A-4s, the A-4AR combines the rugged airframe of the original Skyhawk with advanced avionics and systems derived from fourth-generation fighters.
Equipped with the AN/APG-66V2 radar (a version used in early F-16s), the Fightinghawk features a modern Head-Up Display (HUD), Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), secure datalink, and a night vision-compatible cockpit. While not capable of employing advanced guided munitions like AMRAAM or JDAM, it can deploy AIM-9L Sidewinders, Mk 82 bombs, rocket pods, and ECM pods, making it suitable for air defense, close air support, and interdiction missions.
Powered by the Wright J65-W-20 turbojet, the A-4AR reaches speeds of up to 670 mph (1,078 km/h) and can carry up to 8,200 lbs (3,720 kg) of ordnance on five hardpoints. Its low radar cross-section and small size make it a difficult target during low-level attack profiles.
While it lacks stealth or supersonic capability, the A-4AR remains the backbone of Argentina’s combat aviation fleet. The two-seat OA-4AR variant is used for advanced training and forward air control.
