To be honest, there’s not really a special story behind this car — it’s just the first one I built after coming back to SP for the first time in two years, and yeah, this time I actually downloaded it legally.
Alright, this bit’s just for a bit of flavour.
Catvalt is an engine manufacturing company that’s been around since 1920, founded by a bloke named Frederick Catvalt. They mainly made tough engines, usually for lorries and heavy-duty stuff. But by the 70s, sales were dropping hard, and a bunch of their factories started laying people off. Then in 1975, one of the designers came up with a cracking idea. They pitched a few vehicle concepts, and one of them was this blueprint for a car that looked kinda like a four-door coupe with a boot at the back.
The design itself wasn’t anything fancy or groundbreaking, but the specs were solid. It came fitted with the CE Model 661 engine, pumping out 225hp — not bad at all for the time. That gave it a top speed of 118km/h and even 56km/h in reverse. Fuel-wise, it was actually pretty efficient and held up well.
Skip forward...
In 1976, after loads of prototype testing, the car finally got greenlit for mass production the following year, 1977. Thing is, during the first few months after launch, sales were pretty slow — only about 20% of the stock was actually sold. Bit of a worry for the company, really.
But then in December 1977, out of nowhere, a racing team suddenly picked the Model 001 — also known as the Penjas Evo-1 — as their main car for a touring race. They didn’t end up taking first place or anything, but that moment kicked off the car’s rise to fame. Loads of fans started noticing how well it performed.
Turns out, RedBeer the team running it only made a few engine upgrades, yet the car turned out to be seriously quick. It clocked in at 196km/h on the track, which was proper fast for what was basically a standard production car at the time. It did have a bit of trouble in the corners 'cause the tyres didn’t have the best grip, but even so, the speed alone got people talking.
And yeah, that’s pretty much how it went. By 1990, the car was finally discontinued 'cause it couldn’t keep up with the new standards. It was then followed up by the Penjas Evo-2 a more modern version that still kept the strong performance. It wasn’t just a coupe anymore… it had properly evolved into a sportscar.
Yeah, I guess I’ll have to make the second version now… so, uh… just wait for it, I suppose.
