The CE.15 Hornet is the Spanish two-seat variant of the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 (EF-18B) in service with the Ejército del Aire y del Espacio (EAE). Introduced alongside the single-seat C.15 in the mid-1980s, the CE.15 has been employed for operational missions, conversion training, and combat-capable multirole tasks.

Like the single-seat C.15, the CE.15 preserves the Hornet’s true multirole philosophy, allowing rapid transition between air-to-air and air-to-ground missions. Spanish modernization programs extended the aircraft’s service life through avionics upgrades, improved mission systems, and enhanced compatibility with NATO-standard weapons, including unguided air-to-ground rockets such as the Zuni.

Key features (CE.15 Hornet — EAE)

Digital avionics suite with HUD, computerized navigation and upgraded data buses enabling integration of external stores and sensors.

Multimode AN/APG-65 radar (upgraded variants on modernized aircraft), supporting both air-to-air and air-to-ground modes.

Two-seat cockpit configuration, allowing advanced training, mission coordination, and operational employment with a Weapon Systems Officer.

Proven multirole capability: air defence, ground attack, close air support, and maritime strike.

Compatibility with external pods and self-protection systems, improving survivability and situational awareness.

Armament (example configuration with Zuni rockets)

Air-to-ground rockets: Zuni 5-inch unguided rockets, employed for close air support and area suppression against ground targets.

Air-to-air missiles: AIM-9M Sidewinder for self-defence and short-range interception.

Internal gun: M61A1 20 mm Vulcan cannon for air-to-air combat and strafing missions.

Optional external fuel tanks to extend endurance during strike or support operations.

Operational role and strengths
Armed with Zuni rockets, the CE.15 Hornet demonstrates the platform’s flexibility in close air support and conventional strike roles, particularly in scenarios requiring rapid response and high sortie rates. The combination of robust airframe design, accurate navigation systems, and pilot-WSO crew coordination allows effective employment of unguided munitions while maintaining defensive awareness.

Overall, the CE.15 reflects the Spanish Hornet fleet’s emphasis on adaptability and longevity, remaining a capable and credible multirole aircraft through continuous upgrades and integration within NATO coalition operations.
