DESCRIPTION
Caesar 2A2 or simply Caesar, is the joint-project Main Battle Tank (MBT) of Pan-Obelia Armed Forces (PAF) to replaces Imperial-era M.60/23M “Centaur” in 2055. Caesar 2A2 addresses the problems that present in the M.60/23M during its time in Second Floran-Obelian War (2021-2025) such as the 140mm gun that was deemed an unnecessary “overkill” with very limited ammunition, and the 20mm Autocannon embedded on the turret that took the already cramped room. Caesar 2A2 offers a larger space within the turret and a more compact 130mm gun and avoid unnecessary features. Caesar also improves Centaur’s modularity to a step further and reinforced its protection with lighter but stronger Class-6 composite armor.
Caesar serves PAF as well as various allies of Pan-Obelia Confederation. By 2070, there are at least 1800 Caesars built, and around 250 exported.
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY
Obelian tank development traces back to 1920s where the doctrine emphasis a heavy and armored tank designed to support infantry to break through fortifications such as Fleurmont’s Iron Ring fortifications. By 1940s, a much more mobile combat doctrine developed, combining smaller tank alongside mechanized infantry. The doctrine proven effective in the early stage of the 35 Years War. In the 1950s, the introduction of M.50/51 marked the advancement of Obelian armored warfare. The Imperial Armored Legion becomes a symbol of fierce resistance by the final years of the war, an armored spearhead that refuses to dull.
There was no significant military development post-war, concepts drawn and prototype tested, but none truly become a reality. That until 2010, during the South Obelian Liberation (2010-2019), the necessity of a new armored spearhead became clearer. The up-gunned and upgraded M.50/51s and imported Mirolyan tanks were still no-match against Fleurmont MBTs. After the war, in late 2019, a new tank was proposed; a heavily armored tanks, armed with 140mm gun, an autoloader and high degree of modularity. This tank was officially known as M.60/23 or the “Centaur”. Only few hundreds were built in 2023 as Second Floran-Obelian War (2021-2025) raged on. M.60/23 built with the old, familiar doctrine in mind; a heavily armored tank to support infantry. The tank works well but with numerous drawbacks such as complex 2-piece autoloader, unwieldy caliber that was terrible for long-range combat and few unnecessary features. The Luna-Maria LMa-V12A Diesel-Electric Engine mounted on the tank proven troublesome and prone to overheat during the famed Summer Offensive. Still, after the war, around 1800 tanks served the Neo-Imperium by the late 2050s.
In 2054, Neo-Imperium fractured into several Illian-speaking states due to internal conflicts. However, Pan-Obelia Confederation later formed to formally unite these fractured states. The prior Austerland-Obelian War (2050-2053) revealed further weakness in M.60/23M and further press the necessity of a better tank. A joint-project between Pan-Obelia states was proposed in 2055 for a next-generation tank. Joined by multiple industries such as Myria Heavy Industries, Kola Arm Industries, Lanciarii Arm Industries, NextGen Dynamics, and many more. Initially known as “Carrus 60t”, the project aims to build a next generation MBT and replace the M.60/23M. The requirement includes; stronger armor, suitable for long-range combat and infantry support, integration with Aegis C4I, modularity and high mobility. The first prototype, Carrus 2A1, revealed in 2055 and was armed with the new 130mm L/51 Smoothbore Cannon. The gun proven lethal and flexible, allowing the tank to both works and anti-tank or infantry tank. However, it still shares similar system as M.60/23M including its Model-11 APS system. However, in 2063, a second prototype, Carrus 2A2, revealed with a new turret and overall, new systems.
The second prototypes use the new Class-6B “Sol” Composite Armor, a strong and lightweight composite armor with better effectiveness than the earlier Class-5 and much simpler than Class-6A. A new APS system; 1C7 APS package that includes new Model-23K launcher and Aeterna sensor systems. This increases the tank survivability way above its predecessor. The success of Gemini-S Autonomous Fighter Pilot also further presses the addition of AI integration for the tank, which in the end, were added. Aegis C4I integration further improve the crew awareness; quick data transfer, safe communication and shared battlefield information allow both tank and infantry work seamlessly.
A new autoloading system was installed with capabilities of firing the first 3 rounds with 2 seconds interval. It also allows the tank to put all 48 rounds in protected space in the turret. It works by having 2 racks in front of each other; a reserve rack and loading rack. The reserve rack has 24 rounds, and serves to replenish the autoloading rack with automated system. The autoloading rack also has 24 rounds ready to be fed to the guns. A new feature allows 3 shells to be “pre-loaded” in a magazine-like system, allowing the tank to have a quick follow-up shot for the first 3 rounds. This feature became a staple for this tank as this is the only tank to have such ability. However, it is unreliable to fire only 2 rounds burst, can, but prone to jam as it was designed to fire 3 rounds burst. The feature works well during high-stress situation as the quick follow-up shots saved many tankers life, but cursed by technician for its complexity. In the end, the “magazine” are designed to be more modular, allowing crews and technician to remove or install it with only few adjustments.
1C7 APS package include a Model-4 jamming system and new Model-23K launchers. These APS developed to mitigate M.60/23M’ weakness; top attack and drones. The jamming system works as a soft-kill APS, capable of jamming drones as well as ATGMs. While the launchers capable of launching counter-projectile vertically against top-attack threat. This package also comes with 2 types of sensors; Aeterna A and Aeterna B. Aeterna A works as a short-range detection system in form a “dome” while Aeterna B is more of a long-range detection system that directed to the front and the side.
The second prototype finally accepted into production in 2066 and renamed Caesar 2A2 (referring to Ancient Obelian great conqueror), costing around 6 million Aurum (12 million USD) per unit. Making it by far, one of the most expensive MBT. By 2100, there are 2400 Caesar in active duty in Pan-Obelia Armed Force, and around 250 in allied service.
DEPLOYMENT HISTORY
Caesar 2A2 do not see as much war as previous tanks. But it finally had chance to prove itself in RSA-Birkhan War (2070-2075), where Pan-Obelian force backed RSA against Birkhan Sultanate to fight the resource rich Al-Khalil desert. 270 Caesars were sent as part of 4th Pan-Obelia Battlegroup, 34th Armored Legion to back up the 17th Pan-Obelia Battlegroup. An aid sent by Pan-Obelia as a “repayment” for RSA’s aid during the South Obelia Liberation war.
Known as “Qay?ar” among both RSA and Sultanate force, Caesar 2A2 immediately becomes quite a fear factor against the Sultanate tankers, mainly because of their advanced FCS that could shoot accurately over 6km range, outshooting Sultanate tanks. During a joint-operation; Amaliyyat Amir al-?arb (Operation Warlord), 20 Caesars knocked out in total of 300 Sultanate vehicles, 50 being their MBTs. The Sultanate tanks, mainly imported or leased Kampfpanzer 3A4 from Austerland had a hard time to fight 2A2 Caesar. One major reason is Aeterna B sensor that capable to detect Sultanate MBTs at extreme range of 4-5km, giving Obelian tankers a the first hand advantage.
However, they suffered from overheats often, not because of the engine failure, but Caesar were not made for hot desert climate the Zanjara continent has to offer. A same issue with Obelian infantries, as their life support system; PLS-2A is great to keep their body warm but not to keep their body cooler. As a result, Obelian force were worked “nocturnally”; active at night and rest by the day to maintain their effectiveness. Caesar’s FCS works well during the night as well, so there is not much issue with this.
In Nortalia, Serasian Army and Vallavejos Self-Defence Force imported 200 Caesars for their armored battalion, colloquially known as "César". They once again fought on Serasian Civil War (2078-2079). The untrained and unfamiliar crew and technician resulted in major issues within the autoloading system. 24 Caesars knocked and destroyed from ambush due to the lack of APS system on the exported version. The large size made it hard to fight on narrow Serasian streets.
Caesar 2A2 once again tested in Magna Prima soil, in the third armed conflict between Obelia and Fleurmont in Third Floran-Obelian War (2089-2090). Here, Caesar proved themself once again after the major failure in Serasia. A single Armored Cohort managed to push back advancing Fleurmont Army for a whole week before retreating, allowing the troops behind to arrive before its too late.
