Viss VT-1 Light tank, [ Vehicle, Tank, Number 1 ]
is a Thai-Designed Assault Light Tank made during interwar era, it was made in small number as a Substitude to a Limited Type 76 Vickers 6ton Mk E light tank, that have proven to not be effective.

Development history

Because of limited budgets for tank import in the interwar years, as well as metal price uprise during the great depression, the Import of Thai tank before the outbreak of WW2 was a slow process, as soon as 1933.
Until then, the imported Vicker's 6ton seen a problem and is not in requirement of Royal Thai Ground Forces at the time, the push for Light Tank Development resulted in Internal Design Race for the Delicate light tank design, following the German in the Spanish Civil war, Thai's as an Infantry volunteered, seen the use of Germany Panzerkampfwagen.I and the Soviet T-26 as a Spark of this new arms development.

In 21 March of 1934, the Institution of Armor and Weaponry Design in Ayutthaya started to work on a 8 ton light tank design, with the Help of Vissen Metal working Corporation, as a result, it was fitted with 54mm cannon, and 12.7mm Machine gun mounted on an Asymmetric Turret. There was a plan to install a hull machine gun, as well as secondary 20mm, but this plan seems unnecessary. The design was somewhat similar in concept of a Panzerkampfwagen.II, but just so, it lack autocannon.

at the Late days, the VT-1 design was finalized as the Wooden Mockup is finished in December of 1934, in order to make this Light tank 'Light' and Manoeuvrable, a early engineered Water Cooled E-2 1.4L Petrol/Diesel Hybrid Engine have been designed to fit this tank specifically, although expensive, but no suitable transmission was available, as communication problem in the Institute raise a question about using the same engine as other designed armoured vehicle, or to recommend on developing a new one all entirely, the institute finalised on recommending the Department to developing an Electric Transmission that works for the E-2.

The project was publicly disclosed in New years 1935, and the RTA awarded Vissen Metal Working Company for a 160 order of VT-1 light tank.

However, due to industrial incapacity, 54 Light tank were finished as much as late 1941, already in that time The Empire Of Japan have Invaded Thailand Through the south. The Tank were seen used in Defending the coastal area ofThailand;

  • Such as Southern Thailand

    • Pattani

    • Songkla

    • Nakhon Sithammarat

    • Surat Thani

, but due to Overwhelming forces of the Imperial Japanese Army, Thailand surrendered and agree to let the Japanese Bypass and use their Industrial area, ending the Production line of VT-1 Light tank all completely, unlike the Faster Production TK-3 Medium Tank or TK-1 Light Tank destroyer that require less Industrial Capacity to produce.
