           history

KRI Nanggala was ordered by the government of the Republic of Indonesia on April 2, 1977. At that time, Indonesia applied for a loan of 625 million US dollars from Germany. 100 million US dollars from the loan was used to build KRI Nanggala and KRI Cakra.[11] It was designed by Ingenieurkontor in the city of Lübeck, built by Howaldtswerke in Kiel, and sold by the company Ferrostaal in Essen.[2]

The ship was commissioned in March 1978 and launched on September 10, 1980.[2][12] The submarine then underwent trials in the seas of West Germany before being handed over to the Indonesian Government on 6 July 1981.[12][13] KRI Nanggala left West Germany in early August 1981 with 38 crew under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Armand Aksyah.[14] On October 5, 1981, KRI Nanggala was first shown to the general public, in conjunction with the 36th anniversary of the TNI.[15] The inauguration of its use was carried out by the Minister of Defense and Security / Commander of the Armed Forces General Mohammad Jusuf on October 21, 1981 at the Ujung Surabaya Pier.[16]

KRI Nanggala had made repairs at Howaldtswerke and was completed in 1989.[17] About two decades later, the submarine underwent another full repair at a cost of US$63.7 million over two years in South Korea.[18] The repair was carried out by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) and was completed in January 2012.[a][20][21] In this repair, part of the ship's superstructure was replaced and the weapons, sonar, radar, combat control and propulsion systems were updated. .[22] After repairs, KRI Nanggala is capable of firing four torpedoes simultaneously at four different targets and launching anti-ship missiles such as Exocet or Harpoon. In addition, the dive depth was increased to 257 meters (843 ft) and the maximum speed was increased from 215 knots (398 km/h) to 25 knots (46 km/h).[21] About five years later, KRI Nanggala was equipped with ASELSAN's KULAÇ echo housing system.[23]
