Wikipedia
After World War II, Sweden purchased 163 surplus P-51D Mustangs from the United States in 1945–1946. In Swedish service they were designated J 26 (“Jakt”—fighter). Sweden bought them mainly because they needed a fast, modern interceptor during the early Cold War, and the Mustang was both affordable and extremely capable.

The J 26s served with multiple Swedish Air Force wings, including F 4 Frösön, F 6 Karlsborg, F 8 Barkarby, and F 16 Uppsala. They were used for air defense, fighter training, and reconnaissance duties. During this time, Swedish pilots praised the aircraft for its range, speed, and maneuverability—making it one of Sweden’s best fighters of the late 1940s.

However, Sweden operated in tough northern climates. The Mustangs suffered heavy wear from cold temperatures, rough runways, and maintenance difficulties. By 1952, they began replacing them with the Saab J 29 “Flying Barrel,” and by 1954 the last Swedish P-51s were retired.
