The (Alternate) History of the AHS-14 Triton

After the success of the AHS-13 Icarus, Critical Air was asked to provide a high altitude bomber version.

The aircraft designer quickly realized that the configuration was not well suited to carry bombs. Determined to re-use at least the wings, landing gear and the pressurized pilot compartment (complete with escape pod), they chopped the rear of the aircraft off, added a central boom, and the rest was history.

The AHS-14 was produced in very small volumes as the war was winding down. Pilots complained about the cramped cockpit with very poor visibility. It had pleasant flying characteristics, but the maximum ceiling with bomb load was disappointing. Its operational life was very short as jet aircraft were being introduced which performed much better in the same role..
