Info on the B-32:

B-32 Dominator

'The Consolidated B-32 Dominator (Consolidated Model 34) was an American heavy strategic bomber built for United States Army Air Forces during World War II, which had the distinction of being the last Allied aircraft to be engaged in combat during World War II; that engagement also resulted in the last American to die in air combat in World War II. It was developed by Consolidated Aircraft in parallel with the Boeing B-29 Superfortress as a fallback design should the B-29 prove unsuccessful.[1] The B-32 reached units in the Pacific only in mid-May 1945, and subsequently saw only limited combat operations against Japanese targets before the formal end of the war on 2 September 1945. Most of the extant orders of the B-32 were canceled shortly thereafter and only 118 B-32 airframes of all types were built.'

Summary of the B-32's Operational History:

The B-32 Dominator served as a backup to the B-29 Superfortress during World War II. General George Kenney's request for B-29s was denied due to strategic prioritization, leading to the deployment of the B-32. After successful combat evaluations and test missions, the B-32 entered service, with the 386th Bomb Squadron transitioning to it in July 1945.

B-32

The Dominator participated in combat missions, including photographic reconnaissance over Japan following the ceasefire. Despite encountering Japanese fighters on multiple occasions, the B-32s largely sustained minor damage. However, an engagement on August 18 resulted in casualties and significant damage to one aircraft, marking the last air combat fatalities for the United States in World War II. Production of the B-32 was terminated in October 1945, with most aircraft scrapped or destroyed by 1949.
