The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German single-seat, low-wing fighter aircraft, the backbone of the Luftwaffe during World War II. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, it was the first modern fighter with an all-metal structure, retractable landing gear, and an enclosed cockpit. It saw action in the Spanish Civil War, and remained a formidable opponent throughout WWII due to continuous upgrades, becoming the most produced fighter in history, with over 33,000 built.
