Info: • Aircraft: Bristol Britannia 102 • Operator: Britannia Airways • Flight: BY105 – London Luton (EGGW) to Ljubljana (LJLJ) • Date: August 31 – September 1, 1966 • Total onboard: 117 (110 passengers, 7 crew) • Fatalities: 98 • Survivors: 19?📖 Story:This aircraft was flying a charter service to Yugoslavia with a full load of British holidaymakers. After a calm cruise, the crew began descending into Ljubljana late at night. It was clear, the moon was out, and they opted for a visual approach. But behind the scenes, things were wrong. They forgot to reset their altimeters to the correct local pressure (QFE). That mistake caused the plane to fly over 1,000 feet too low. In the dark, over forested terrain with no lights below, the crew didn’t notice. No warning. No last-minute pull-up. The aircraft clipped trees and crashed just short of the runway.??? Crash Cause: • ? Altimeters set wrong (QNH instead of QFE) • ? Night visual approach without terrain awareness • ? Crew didn’t cross-check instruments • ? Aircraft was fully functional – CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain)?🧠 Lessons Learned: • Double-check instruments – always • Visual approaches at night are not always safe • Proper altimeter setting = life or death • Resulted in improved approach procedures and awareness training?🏷?
