5H32 Duga (also 5N32) is the Soviet GRAU index for the Duga over-the-horizon (OTH) radar system, nicknamed "Russian Woodpecker" due to its characteristic shortwave pulses.

It was an early-warning radar for detecting ICBM launches, part of the Soviet ABM network. The main operational site was near Chernobyl (Chernobyl-2 receiver + transmitter), built in the late 1970s–1980s. It became infamous for interfering with global HF communications. Abandoned after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

Duga (5N32) consisted of separate transmitter and receiver sites (bistatic OTH radar).

Receiver array (Chernobyl-2, main surviving structure):
- 500 m long × 135–150 m tall
- Two adjacent antenna arrays:
- Larger one ("D"): 135–150 m high, for lower frequencies (~5–14 MHz)
- Smaller one ("E"): ~90–100 m high, for higher frequencies (THE ACTUAL BUILD)
- Phased dipole curtain arrays with horizontal dipoles in "birdcage"/cylindrical cage elements
- ~100–150 masts supporting the curtain

Transmitter (Lubensk / 60 km away):
- Similar but smaller phased array curtain
- Much higher power (10 MW+ peak pulses)

Core point: massive bistatic curtain-antenna phased array system for ionospheric reflection.

Duga (5N32) operational history:

• Experimental testing began ~1976.
• Full operation started July 1976.
• Chernobyl-2 (Duga-1) site active until Chernobyl disaster (April 1986); largely abandoned afterward due to contamination.
• System officially operated until December 1989.
• Another Duga deployed near Komsomolsk-on-Amur (Far East, Russia) reached combat mode ~1982.
• Never fully reliable due to ionospheric instability; decommissioned end of 1989.
