The RF-65 "Kingfish" is a two-seat fighter-bomber developed for the Wright Isles Air Defense Force.
History
The Kingfish was developed as part of a project that aimed to replace the WIADF's aging and disorganized propeller fleet with a standard jet fighter. It was designed with the latest in 1/1.5-gen technology, such as radars and early guided missiles, while still keeping air-to-air dogfighting in mind.
The first RF-65 was delivered in 1954, and was fully present in WIADF operations by 1956. It was used in interception and light attack roles, successfully defending the archipelago against the occasional attack or infiltration. The RF-65 airframes, while still strong and capable, was rapidly obsoleting compared to contemporary jet fighters by the early 70s, prompting the development of the RF-7. The WIADF retired all RF-65s by 1980, but kept some for use as target drones and training aircraft. Remaining RF-65s were sold to the Maywar Air Corps, where they were modernized and their use was (somehow) extended until 1991.
Between 1954 and 1970, a total of 335 "Kingfishes" were produced. 5 are in flying condition as demonstrators and warbirds.
Features & Characteristics
The plane cruises at about 420mph in level flight and can reach the high sub-sonics in a dive. The tapered wings provide good lift, shortening takeoff times and giving it surprisingly tighter turns than I had intended. The RF-65 comes only packed lightly with fuel, and has a short range as-downloaded. Equip fuel tanks and change the tank allotment as you wish.
The RF-65 has two crew members: A pilot and an operator. The pilot controls the craft (duh), has the flight instruments and controls, and has some capability with deploying weapons. The operator uses the CRT radar to locate aircraft, has buttons to prepare and fire payloads, and gives the pilot speeds and headings for combat. You should change out the radar and put whatever modded/self-made one that you prefer.
